Lord, Reveal Yourself To Me

TODAY’S VERSE
“He revealed his character to Moses and his deeds to the people of Israel.”
Psalms 103:7 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love the fact that God reveals Himself to us. He revealed His love to Moses and the children of Israel. Paul writes to the Church, “And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully.” God revealed His love to David. Look at what he writes, “He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. He is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. His unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. The LORD is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.” Today, might your heart be ready to receive all that God wants to reveal to you. May you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, reveal Your love to me. Help me know the heights and depths of Your compassion. Help me grasp the greatness of Your mercy and forgiveness. Move in my heart I pray and help me know You more.
AMEN

Light Your Corner of the World

TODAY’S VERSE
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Matthew 5:14

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love synergy. That is the result of different entities working together to create a bigger response than they could by themselves. Have you ever been to a “candle light sing”, when at the end of the service one candle is lit and one by one each candle in the auditorium sends forth its illumination? What a beautiful site. How amazing that one little candle can be part of such brightness. This is the effect Jesus had in mind when He said that we were the “light of the world”. He was leaving this world and with the power of the Holy Spirit in each of our lives we would each shine our own light. Together we would become the light of the world. Dallas Willard in his book “Hearing God” writes, “Those who receive the grace of God’s saving companionship in His word are by that very fact also fitted to show humankind how to live.  Collectively the ‘called out’ people of God, the church is empowered to stand up for wandering humanity to see. When faced with starvation, crime, economic disasters and difficulties, disease, loneliness, alienation and war, the church should be, because it alone could be, the certified authority on how to live to which the world looks for answers.” We are called to be the light where we are. Today, come to Him, bring Him your candle; let Him light it for you and then light up your corner of the world. I’ll light mine. If everyone reading this devotional would let Christ light their light, someone is bound to be effected. There are people all around us dying to come out of the darkness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, speak to me, ignite my heart and then help me shine that light today. Help me share the light that I have with those hurting in utter darkness so they too can live in the light of your love and glory.
AMEN

The Holy Spirit, Our Counselor!

TODAY’S VERSE
“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
John 14:26

TODAY’S THOUGHT
One of the great roles of the Holy Spirit in our life is that of a counselor. Some translations us the word comforter. The Holy Spirit is able to give us insight, wisdom and peace by directly communing with our inner being. He is able to speak truth to us. The Holy Spirit is the inward expression of God and is able to encourage and give us assurance and hope. But how do we become comfortable with the comforter? How do we avail ourself of this wonderful part of God? It is like any other relationship; it takes time. We need to take the time to attune ourself to God and ask Him to speak to us through the Holy Spirit. As we read the Bible, spend time in prayer, begin to ask questions we will find ourself drawn to God and listening to His sweet voice through the power of His Holy Spirit.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I pray that You will speak to me through Your Holy Spirit. Guide me, direct my path, counsel me in all that I need and do. In Jesus’ name I pray.
AMEN

Behold His Beauty

TODAY’S VERSE
“One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.”
Psalms 27:4 (ESV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I remember when I first saw my wife. People had told me about her. They said that we would be a great couple. One friend, who was trying to match us up, brought me a magazine article with her picture in it. That was it. I was smitten. I beheld her beauty. It was more so when I finally met her. While we were dating, I would catch myself looking at her. Still today, I am moved by her presence. This is more than a visual experience. It is emotional and existential. Why? Because I fell in love with her. Did you know that you can behold God in the same way? You can. God has given us an “inner eye,” that spiritual ability to connect with Him in a deep and personal way. David knew this, so he made it his most passionate desire. He wrote, “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; to behold the beauty of the Lord.” If you can do that, everything else in life will fall in line. Today, stop and ask God to help you “behold His beauty.” Commit yourself to spend time in His presence, read His word, meditate on His goodness and you will begin to fall in love with God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me begin to behold Your beauty. Help me know You, hear You, fellowship with You. Help me trust You, commit myself to You, and  love You. Lord, I know this is a process but it is one I deeply desire. Start today, Father, and guide me into a deeper relationship with You. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Unbelief

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then he climbed into the boat, and the wind stopped. They were totally amazed, for they still didn’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. Their hearts were too hard to take it in.”
Mark 6:51-52 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Why is it so hard to believe? What is it about the supernatural that makes us so skeptical? Why is it we can experience a miracle one minute and doubt if God will help us in the next? The disciples had seen Jesus heal countless numbers of people. He just finished feeding thousands of people from a few loafs of bread and fish. And yet when they were in a battle for their life on the sea, they are shocked that Jesus could (or perhaps would) stop the raging sea. When explaining this mystery Mark simply says that “Their hearts were too hard to take it in.” And therein lies the problem . . . their hearts, their felt beliefs, their deep down gut level feeling that things are okay, were not softened by a relational belief system. Their hearts didn’t really know Jesus. They may have seen His power, but they did not see His motives. They weren’t convinced of His love for them. And neither are we. If we did, we would react differently to the storms we encounter. Instead we too doubt, cower in fear, or lash out in anger. All symbolic reactions to our confusion over who He is and what He wants to do. We wonder, are we lovable enough? Is He? And so we too don’t understand the significance of the miracle of the loaves. But we can! We can begin to understand, one day at a time, as we get to know Jesus better and better. Today, spend time with Him. Begin to know His heart and we will find ours begin to soften.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord Jesus, help me to know You better. I want to trust You more. I want to know Your heart, motives and wisdom. Help me know You more, love You more and then trust You in everything that comes my way.
AMEN

What Do You Want Him To Do?

TODAY’S VERSE
“She touched the fringe of his robe, for she thought, ‘If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.’”
Matthew 9:20-21
“Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!’ Jesus stopped and called them. ‘What do you want me to do for you?’”
Matthew 20:30-32

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Deep down inside you know there has to be more. There must be relief for your pain. Perhaps like the woman in today’s passage, you wonder, “What if I could just touch the fringe on His robe?” Like the two blind men on the side of the road, if you knew Jesus was coming, you would shout out to Him. In his book The Church That Heals Doug Murren writes, “We need the miraculous in the church today. Postmodern people are too broken to be fixed through simple human caregiving; they need to be pieced back together through the Supernatural healing of Jesus through His body the church.” What is it you need today? Where are you hurting? Today Jesus is asking you the same thing that He asked the blind men, “What do you want me to do for you?”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Jesus, I am sitting here today by the side of the road. I am in great need. I have shouted for mercy and You have heard me. Now, dear Lord, please hear my request. I simply come in faith to touch the hem of Your garment and be healed. Heal me I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

The Unseen Real

TODAY’S VERSE
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
II Corinthians 4:16,18
“I have set the LORD always before me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”
Psalm 16:8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The presence of God is a reality that we can experience. He is the God who is there. Unfortunately, we can go day after day and never be conscious of His reality. Leanne Payne in her book “Listening Prayer” writes, “It is especially easy for modern people to regard the supernatural world and activities as somehow less real than the world we behold with our senses. As twentieth-century Christians, we live in a materialistic age in which our systems of learning have long based their conclusions on scientific truth alone. The presuppositions of such systems have misled many generations of students, blinding them to the truths of God and the Unseen Real.” Paul says that he did not lose heart because of the reality of fixing his eyes on what is unseen. The unseen reality of God renewed his heart, day by day. David said he was not shaken by life’s experiences because he experienced God at his side. How about you? Is God’s presence a reality in your life? Do you renew your heart day by day because of the reality of His presence in your life? It’s not too late. Start today to experience His reality. Spend time with God, talk to Him, ask Him to reveal Himself to you. When you do, you will find out that He really is the “Unseen Real.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, my life is so full of everything else but You. I spend so much of my time without any awareness of Your presence. I confess, I have kept You at a safe distance, turned You into a religious relic. Forgive me. Today, reveal Yourself to me, Lord renew my heart today by Your unseen reality. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Maturity

TODAY’S VERSE
“Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.”
II Corinthians 13:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It was Paul’s desire that the church in Corinth mature. The church was full of confusion, sin and strife but Paul did not give up. Instead, he sent them a letter and at the end of his writing he appealed one more time for them to mature. They needed to change their behavior if they were going to be effective in their Christian walk. Paul wanted them to be joyful and the way he suggested that they do that was to encourage each other. Joy comes from Godly encouraging relationships. Nothing is more important than each of us committing ourselves to encourage others. Nothing works like encouragement in helping us live in harmony and peace. And the result of our harmony and peace is the fellowship of God Himself, the one and true God of love and peace. Today chose maturity by being an encourager and live in harmony and peace with those around you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, help me become more and more mature. Help me be an encourager, living in harmony and peace with everyone I come into contact with. Thank You, Father, that when I do make this effort to obey You that You are right there with me filling me with Your love and peace. Help me love like You do. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Trust In Him

TODAY’S VERSE
“O LORD of Heaven’s Armies, what joy for those who trust in you.”
Psalms 84:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Who do you trust? Whether or not you have joy can depend on it. How many times have we put our trust in those things that did not deliver? Our friends, programs, fortune, our own strength, a great plan – how many times have our hopes been smashed because our trust was in the wrong place? Today, God is calling. The Almighty, the Lord of all of Heaven’s Armies, says, “Trust in me. Give me your hope. Have faith in my strength and my unfailing love for you.” And so, we move in closer. Barely one hope left – yet that is enough. A mustard seed of faith is all it takes and God delivers. His love is sure, His promises are true, our joy is secure. Today, put your trust in Him and return to joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, You proved Your love for me on the Cross. Today, I come and put my trust in You. Increase my faith, breathe hope into the depths of my soul and return me to joy. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Never Forsaken

TODAY’S VERSE
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’”
Hebrews 13:5

TODAY’S THOUGHT
One of the first things they teach you in marriage communications is to stay away from using emotionally fatalistic words like “never” or “always”, as in, “You never help around here!” or “You always waste money.” It is very rare that human behavior is “always” or “never”. But what about God? The Bible makes it clear that His ways are not our ways. In Romans 3:4 it says, “Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true!” Now consider today’s verse in light of the fact that God does not lie. Moses tells us to be strong and courageous and not afraid. The author of Hebrews wrote to be content with what you have. Why all the optimism? Why the courage? Because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” God Himself has said to you and I, “Never.” Never. NEVER! Let it sink in – He will never leave you or forsake you! Today, right now, let this fact change your day. Let it reshape your emotions. Let it precede all your decisions. He will never leave you or forsake you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I wander through most days with so much doubt. Perhaps apathy is a better word. I live as if you half exist. I haven’t taken most of your promises seriously. I have not been content. Most the time I am not strong or courageous. Forgive me for this. Instead, help me today really grasp what it means that you will never leave me or forsake me. In Jesus Name.
AMEN
