Word and Power

TODAY’S VERSE
“Jesus replied, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.”
Matthew 22:27 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Opps! How many times has that happened? We live under a certain assumption, do all kinds of things only to find out that we have it all wrong! Assumptions do that. They can lead us down the wrong road. A road full of wild emotions and deep regret. Not just assumptions, misguided beliefs can also take us on the wrong journey. Such were those who were trying to debate Jesus and trick Him into contradicting their traditions. Two things Jesus pointed out, both mistakes. One, they did not know the scriptures. They thought they did. They knew the words but not the intentions. They knew the law but not the grace. They knew the letter but not the spirit. God’s intention has always been to bring life, love and grace to mankind. If you do not know that, you do not know the scriptures. Secondly, they did not know the power of God. They knew the stories in scriptures but not the reality. They knew about God but not the power of God. They believed in death, but not God’s power to give eternal life. Don’t make the same mistake. Today choose to believe. Get to know the reality behind every page of the scriptures. Get to know God and all the power He has for your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me get to know You. Help the scriptures come alive in my life. Help me live in the power of Your resurrection. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

A Word From God

TODAY’S VERSE

“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—He will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”
John 14:26 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to get in the habit of reading the “word of God” without getting a “word from God.” There is a big difference. The Pharisees knew the word. Satan quoted it. But God’s word is meant for more than just reading. Paul wrote in a letter to Timothy, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” Jesus said that He gave us the Holy Spirit in order to personalize His word to each of us. He said, “He will teach you everything.” The author of the Hebrews wrote, “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” So when we come to the word of God, let us remember that we are coming to God and ask Him to speak to us, move in our heart and show us His will. Today, don’t settle for the word of God, get a word from God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your wisdom. I need Your instruction. I need Your assurances. As I come to Your word, open my eyes, open my heart that I may hear Your voice and understand what You want to say to me.
AMEN

God’s Word

TODAY’S VERSE
“The commandments of the LORD are right, bringing joy to the heart.”
Psalms 19:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The Bible is a precious gift from God. Divinely inspired, it was written in order that we might know how to live. The Bible inspires, convicts, guides, warns and teaches us. David wrote that believing what the Bible says is right and following its precepts brings joy to our heart.
He then goes on to share in a very poetic way, how valuable the word of God is. He writes, “The commands of the LORD are clear, giving insight for living. – The laws of the LORD are true; each one is fair. They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb. They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them.” Today, spend time with God and His word and let it bring a deep joy into your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your word. Speak to me, guide me, correct me, inspire me. Teach me how to live. Give me a deep and lasting joy deep down in my heart.
AMEN

Every Thought

TODAY’S VERSE
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
II Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to let our thoughts get away from us. Worry, fear, anger, a whole host of emotions can send our thoughts into a downward spiral. Before you know it, we are heading toward dire consequences. Instead, we need to make a habit of bringing our thoughts to Christ. Paul knew all about this. Imagine waking up in prison day after day for doing no moral wrong. How about being shipwrecked on an island or suffering with excruciating wounds from being beaten within an inch of your life. Day after day Paul was cold, hungry, tired, and falsely accused. And yet, through all of this, he knew how to discipline his thinking. Paul knew that he was in a spiritual battle and he came to God and renewed his mind every day! He said it this way, “We live in the world, but we do not fight in the same way the world fights. We fight with weapons that are different from those the world uses. Our weapons have power from God that can destroy the enemy’s strong places. We destroy people’s arguments and every proud thing that raises itself against the knowledge of God. We capture every thought and make it give up and obey Christ.” Today, don’t let your thoughts get away from you. Capture those thoughts and emotions that will take you down the wrong path and bring them to Christ. Let Him show you the way and fill your mind with His thoughts.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, I ask You to fill my mind with Your truth. I submit my thinking to You and Your word. Help me capture every rogue thought and make it obey You. I give You my mind; guide me I pray.
AMEN

Really Knowing

TODAY’S VERSE
“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,”
Ephesians 1:17-18 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God want us to know Him. And He has created us with a great capacity for knowledge. As we grow in Him our knowledge also grows. Paul expresses this in today’s verses. He uses three different words for knowing or knowledge. First he asks God to give us the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. This is where we start to learn and acquire knowledge about God and gain insight and understanding. But God doesn’t want us to stop there. Paul also says that we should gain this wisdom so we can “know” Christ better. This is a more personal intimate knowledge. This is experiential knowledge. How we need to move from our head to our heart and get to know our savior in a more personal way. Paul finishes by praying that more than knowledge; that the eyes of our heart would be enlightened so we would “know” the hope to which He has called us. This is our deepest felt knowledge. It is akin to the Biblical phrase, “being fully persuaded.” It is an assurance. The way they expressed it in the original language is, “I know that I know, that I know!” Oh that we would grow to this level of assurance. That our experience with God would result is such a way that we can say about God and His love for us, and all the promises that He has made; that we are confident in Him, that we are full of assurance, that there is no doubt, that we are fully persuaded, that we know that we know, that we know.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me know You. Help me grow in my knowledge and in my experience with You. Open the eyes of my heart so I can say with confidence that I know that I know, that I know all about You.
AMEN
