A Conversation With God

TODAY’S VERSE
“But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.”
Micah 7:7

TODAY’S THOUGHT
He hears our prayers. He hears, and the very fact that He hears, assures us that He in turn will answer us. Prayer is not a one way street. Prayer was never meant to be a list of demands or a message we leave on an answering machine. Prayer is a conversation. Leanne Payne in her book Listening Prayer writes, “That our God is faithful to hear and answer all prayer is something I want to shout from the housetop.” Dallas Willard in his book Hearing God writes, “A Biblical Christian is not just someone who holds certain beliefs about the Bible. He or she is also someone who leads the kind of life demonstrated in the Bible: a life of personal, intelligent interaction with God.” We worship the God who listens. We serve the God who answers. Our God desires a conversation. Isn’t it time you really talked to Him? Today, talk to God. Share with Him your concerns, desires and hopes. But don’t just pray. Converse with Him. Ask Him questions and listen for answers.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, today I come to You to have a conversation. You have called me Your “friend” so I come as a friend. As I pour out my heart to You, as I strike up a conversation, tune my heart to hear Your reply. Fill my heart with Your peace, joy and hope. Might I experience Your loving presence during our time together. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

The Holy Spirit, Our Counselor!

TODAY’S VERSE
“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
John 14:26

TODAY’S THOUGHT
One of the great roles of the Holy Spirit in our life is that of a counselor. Some translations us the word comforter. The Holy Spirit is able to give us insight, wisdom and peace by directly communing with our inner being. He is able to speak truth to us. The Holy Spirit is the inward expression of God and is able to encourage and give us assurance and hope. But how do we become comfortable with the comforter? How do we avail ourself of this wonderful part of God? It is like any other relationship; it takes time. We need to take the time to attune ourself to God and ask Him to speak to us through the Holy Spirit. As we read the Bible, spend time in prayer, begin to ask questions we will find ourself drawn to God and listening to His sweet voice through the power of His Holy Spirit.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I pray that You will speak to me through Your Holy Spirit. Guide me, direct my path, counsel me in all that I need and do. In Jesus’ name I pray.
AMEN

Quiet And Confidence

TODAY’S VERSE
“This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: ‘Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it.’”
Isaiah 30:15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It seems like the last thing we want to do is slow down. We say we believe in God and want His direction in our life but we never stop to listen to Him. We go from event to event like unguided drones, on a mission but flying without direction. Isaiah wanted to make a point. He refers to God as the “Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel” hoping that we would listen. And what is it that God says? He says that it is only in returning and resting in Him that we have any chance of making it in this life. He assures us that it is in quietness and the confidence from time spent with God that we get the strength we need for our journey. Don Postema in his book “Space For God” shares that a person who desires peace and strength in God needs “silence, if their words are to mean anything; reflection, if their actions are to have any significance; contemplation, if they are to see the world as it really is; prayer, if they are going to be conscious of God, if they are to ‘know God and enjoy God forever.’”  Today, seek silence, reflection, contemplation and prayer. Seek God and you will find that in quietness with Him you will find strength.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I come to You and quiet my heart. I need You. I need to hear Your voice. Help me find the strength I need as I seek to spend time with You in contemplation and prayer.
AMEN

Wait On Him

TODAY’S VERSE
“Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him.”
Psalms 62:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Why is it so hard to wait on God? It is much easier to fret and worry. Or to take matters into our own hands and do things our own way.
Perhaps it is because we have an intellectual assent toward God instead of a heartfelt surrender to Him. We “know about” God, but barely know Him. I love the fact that the Psalmist says, “Let all that I am wait quietly before the Lord.” There is a soulful sound to that phrase. A surrender of the heart, a heart that is expectant of those things that the Prophet Isaiah talked about when he wrote, “But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” And so today let us wait. Stop and commit yourself to Him. Trust Him. Surrender to Him and let Him renew your strength. Today, put your hope in Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, I come to You today with all that I am. I come and wait before You. I put my trust in You, I put all my hope in You. Renew my strength I pray. Speak to my heart and make me whole. In Jesus’ name I pray.
AMEN

What Do You Want Him To Do?

TODAY’S VERSE
“She touched the fringe of his robe, for she thought, ‘If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.’”
Matthew 9:20-21
“Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!’ Jesus stopped and called them. ‘What do you want me to do for you?’”
Matthew 20:30-32

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Deep down inside you know there has to be more. There must be relief for your pain. Perhaps like the woman in today’s passage, you wonder, “What if I could just touch the fringe on His robe?” Like the two blind men on the side of the road, if you knew Jesus was coming, you would shout out to Him. In his book The Church That Heals Doug Murren writes, “We need the miraculous in the church today. Postmodern people are too broken to be fixed through simple human caregiving; they need to be pieced back together through the Supernatural healing of Jesus through His body the church.” What is it you need today? Where are you hurting? Today Jesus is asking you the same thing that He asked the blind men, “What do you want me to do for you?”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Jesus, I am sitting here today by the side of the road. I am in great need. I have shouted for mercy and You have heard me. Now, dear Lord, please hear my request. I simply come in faith to touch the hem of Your garment and be healed. Heal me I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Hard Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
“He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by their hard hearts.”
Mark 3:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Here we see Jesus angry. The Pharisees, who thought they were so close to God because of their ability to follow the letter of the law, failed to see that it was better to follow God than their traditions. It angered Jesus to see mankind in their stubborn rebellion toward Him. It angered Him that the Pharisees thought God cared more about the law than a man that needed healing. But we also see another side of  Jesus. From anger Jesus changes His demeanor to sadness. Sadness over how far we had gotten from Him. Sadness that we are blinded to the truth and that we allow our hearts to become hardened toward Him. So often we paint the picture of an angry God. A God who cannot tolerate our sin. A God who knows all the rules and expects us to live by the rules. Yet, there is the part of God that is saddened at our willful avoidance of Him. Our slow gradual hardening of our heart. Today, come to Him. Worship Him. Let His love soften Your heart again.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I have let so many things come between me and You. I have allowed my heart to harden toward Your desire for my life. Forgive me. I come now and ask You to soften my heart again. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Transformation

TODAY’S VERSE
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we – are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
II Corinthians 3:17-18 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God is in the transforming business. I have seen it over and over again. God transformed Joseph’s situation. Joseph told his brothers, decades after they sold him to slave traders, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.” Terry Wardle, in his book “Wounded,” writes about the transforming process he went through with the Holy Spirit, “I have experienced the healing hand of God, times of sweet intimate communion, and hard days when He seemed silent and uninvolved. – But of this I am sure: God has used these events to transform my life! – I can testify without hesitation that it is true – in God’s hands the object of one’s greatest pain does become the source of one’s greatest blessing.” There is freedom in Christ and He desires to transform you and I more and more into His likeness. Today bring your cares, burdens, and situations to Him and let Him begin to transform them.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Holy Spirit, I ask that You transform my bondage into Your freedom. Transform my pain into Your blessing. Transform my life into Your likeness. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Maturity

TODAY’S VERSE
“Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you.”
II Corinthians 13:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It was Paul’s desire that the church in Corinth mature. The church was full of confusion, sin and strife but Paul did not give up. Instead, he sent them a letter and at the end of his writing he appealed one more time for them to mature. They needed to change their behavior if they were going to be effective in their Christian walk. Paul wanted them to be joyful and the way he suggested that they do that was to encourage each other. Joy comes from Godly encouraging relationships. Nothing is more important than each of us committing ourselves to encourage others. Nothing works like encouragement in helping us live in harmony and peace. And the result of our harmony and peace is the fellowship of God Himself, the one and true God of love and peace. Today chose maturity by being an encourager and live in harmony and peace with those around you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, help me become more and more mature. Help me be an encourager, living in harmony and peace with everyone I come into contact with. Thank You, Father, that when I do make this effort to obey You that You are right there with me filling me with Your love and peace. Help me love like You do. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Never Forsaken

TODAY’S VERSE
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’”
Hebrews 13:5

TODAY’S THOUGHT
One of the first things they teach you in marriage communications is to stay away from using emotionally fatalistic words like “never” or “always”, as in, “You never help around here!” or “You always waste money.” It is very rare that human behavior is “always” or “never”. But what about God? The Bible makes it clear that His ways are not our ways. In Romans 3:4 it says, “Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true!” Now consider today’s verse in light of the fact that God does not lie. Moses tells us to be strong and courageous and not afraid. The author of Hebrews wrote to be content with what you have. Why all the optimism? Why the courage? Because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” God Himself has said to you and I, “Never.” Never. NEVER! Let it sink in – He will never leave you or forsake you! Today, right now, let this fact change your day. Let it reshape your emotions. Let it precede all your decisions. He will never leave you or forsake you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I wander through most days with so much doubt. Perhaps apathy is a better word. I live as if you half exist. I haven’t taken most of your promises seriously. I have not been content. Most the time I am not strong or courageous. Forgive me for this. Instead, help me today really grasp what it means that you will never leave me or forsake me. In Jesus Name.
AMEN

Renew Your Strength

TODAY’S VERSE
“We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.  –  we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day.
II Corinthians 4:8-9, 15-16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Do you know that you have a divine purpose? You do. God has chosen you to live for Him. He wants to live His love and passion through you. You are His ambassador. No one knew this better than the Apostle Paul. He knew he was a messenger of God to bring God’s love to those that did not know Him. And in doing this Paul suffered many physical and mental trials. But one thing was sure, he did not give up. How was Paul able to press on against insurmountable odds? Where did he get the strength to persevere?  He received his strength from God. He wrote, “Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are renewed every day.” We can experience the same thing. We can come to the same God who gave Paul strength and cry out, “Lord, help me. Renew my spirit. Come and give me the strength I need to get through this time.” And He will. So today, don’t give up. Come to God and be renewed. Get your strength from Him and be about the purpose that God has called you to.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, I thank You that I will never be abandoned by You. You will never let me be completely crushed or destroyed. Instead, I come today to be renewed. Renew my spirit I pray and give me strength to live for You.
AMEN
