Very Good News

TODAY’S VERSE
For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes.
Romans 1:16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul was eager to preach the gospel in Rome, so he wrote the church there a letter. Many teachers in Rome were spreading false rumors about Christ and Christianity, so Paul wrote the church, telling them there was nothing to be ashamed of about the gospel. He assured them the gospel message was real and was “the power of God at work saving everyone who believes.” We are in a similar situation today. Most people feel Christianity is not relevant to today’s lifestyle. Even though it was the church in centuries past that was responsible for helping the poor, sick, and troubled, today, much of that is given to the government and secular non-profits. Many judge Christianity by those who have had national attention as ministers or evangelists and have had moral failings. Others attack the church for those few who profit financially from ministry. Shameful things have happened in the name of Christianity, and sadly, we have lost our moral authority. How, then, do we share the message of God’s love in an environment where, to many, it seems Christianity has no relevancy and, to others, no moral value? We do it one relationship at a time. We can use our skills, resources, influence, and networks to make a difference in people’s lives while giving testimony to what God has done for us. We can be “doers” helping others in the name of Christ. We can be “inviters,” inviting people to come and hear about Christ. We can be “sharers,” giving our resources to others in need. We can be “encouragers” by sharing why we are hopeful and how they, too, can have the same hope. Finally, we can be “lovers” of those around us, living out the love that God has for them. When we “live” out our Christianity and share our testimony with others, we, too, will not be ashamed.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me be a witness to those around me. Help me share Your “Good News” in the way I live and speak.
AMEN

Renew My Mind

TODAY’S VERSE
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.
Romans 12:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to allow secular thinking to creep into our everyday lives. David Kinniman, the president of the Barna Group, writes that “we live in a society that values fairness over justice, consuming over creating, fame over accomplishment, glamour over character, image over holiness, and entertainment over discernment.” How true. The Kingdom of God has values that are counter to those that have been embraced by modern society. So what can we do? The secret, Paul shares, is to allow God to constantly transform us by changing the way we think. As we pray, read the word, and commune with the Holy Spirit, we will begin to see the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control become realities in our lives. Peter shares that as you gradually increase faith, moral excellence, spiritual knowledge, self-control, patient endurance, Godliness, brotherly affection, and love for everyone, you will be more productive and useful in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. So today, examine your life and let God transform you by changing the way you think.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your Holy Spirit to help me. I am so vulnerable. It is so easy for me to copy the behavior and customs of the world. Please help renew my mind and make me the person you want me to be.

Everything We Need

TODAY’S VERSE
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him.
II Peter 1:3 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How many times have we felt inadequate in a situation? If only there were something that could help us. It is easy to feel this way about our spiritual life. How can we live for God? How can we live this Christian life the way He wants us to? By ourselves, we can’t. But the good news is, “He has given us everything we need for life and godliness.” How? Through knowing Him and His promises. What a blessing! Capture the scope of what Peter is saying: he has “given us everything we need for life and Godliness!” Today, spend time and get to know God. Talk to Him. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. If you spend time getting to know God, you will find that He has everything you need for life and godliness.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, I want to live the life You want me to, but I can’t do it alone. I need You. I need Your promises. Reveal Yourself to me today and in the days to come so, I can get to know You more and more and live the life You desire for me.

God’s Way

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How many times have we regretted something we said or did? We were too hasty, reacting before we could think. How much pain have we caused acting out of anger, not concerned about the consequences? James admonishes us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. How different would our life be if we would follow this simple advice? How more effective would we be in our job, ministry, or dealing with those in our family? What opportunities to heal and bless others would be ours if we submit to James’ behavior code? Today, we can make a choice. Choose to listen. Choose to think before we speak. Choose to pray before we act out our anger. With God, all things are possible.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, I ask for Your help this day to watch my tongue and emotions. Please help me to listen to others. Help me to be careful before I speak, and help me control my temper. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit so I can be more like Your Son Jesus.

Do You Want To Change?

TODAY’S VERSE
When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
John 5:6

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus came to the Pool of Bethesda, where many sick hoped to get better. For 38 years, this man was disabled, lying on his pallet, alone and unable to get into the fabled water. Thirty-eight years. Jesus comes along, and instead of asking, “What do you want me to do?” He asks, “Do you want to get well?” The answer should be obvious, but is it? Perhaps the disabled man has long since given up. Perhaps he has tied his meaning and significance to being a victim. Maybe people kept telling him that he would never get better. What if bitterness has dug its roots deep into his soul? Getting well isn’t always an easy choice. Healing can stir up painful emotions. Sometimes, it seems easier to stay in our pain than try to change. After all, it has become our normal. How about you? What is hurting you? What is your disease? Is it bitterness, anger, depression, or shame? Are you living in financial distress? Are you enslaved to an addiction? Are you suffering from a failed relationship? Jesus is asking you, “Do you want to get well?” The Healer is at the door; what will your answer be?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, thank You for walking by me today. You know my needs, and “Yes, Lord,” I want to get well. I want to be everything You want me to be. Help me, heal me, Lord, I pray.

Give This Day To God

TODAY’S VERSE
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Do you start your day hearing a word from God about His unfailing love? Do you start your day trusting in Him? Do you ask Him for direction, protection, and instruction for the tasks ahead of you this day? If not, why not start today? No matter what your yesterdays were or what you fear for tomorrow, nothing stops you from committing this day to God. You can begin a new habit of thanksgiving and expectation today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, in the quietness of this moment, let me hear You confirm Your unfailing love for me. Right now, I put my complete trust in You. Please show me the way I should go and rescue me from any trouble today. O LORD, I hide myself in You, so please teach me to do Your will. Lead me by Your Spirit, I pray. In Jesus’ name.

It’s Your Choice

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Choices. Every day, we are called upon to make choices. Some insignificant, some with heavy consequences. Some choices in life lead us down specific paths. Marriage, vocation, and other significant choices all affect our future. But even the major decisions are made up of thousands of different options. Our everyday choices determine how we live out our marriage, vocation, or other significant aspects of life. That is why what you choose today is so important. You may have started down a path and strayed off. Today, you can choose to turn around. You may have habitual choices that have been negative. Today, you can choose to go another direction. You have the power to choose. God is constantly calling out to us, “Choose me.” God and our choice, what a powerful combination. Choose today whom you will serve, for not to choose is to choose already.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, please help me. I admit I haven’t always chosen wisely. Give me wisdom, discernment, and self-discipline to make the right choices today. Most of all, today, Dear Lord, I choose You. I choose to love You and live for You. In Jesus’ name.

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Sometimes, the most significant prayers are the simplest. “Help me!” It is the cry of the heart that God hears. David knew what problems were like. But he knew where to turn. In another Psalm, he wrote, “In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.” How about you? Will you cry out to God to help you? What is it that your soul needs? What is the longing of your heart? Talk to Him, and pour out your heart. He will listen.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for the invitation to pour out my heart to You. I cry, “Help me.” Please help me where I don’t even know I need help. Help me in ways that only You can. Help me with Your power, Your love, and Your wisdom. I commit myself to Your loving care. In Jesus’ name.

Experiencing His Presence

TODAY’S VERSE
I will bless the LORD who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.
Psalms 16:7, 8 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
There is one prayer that has made all the difference in my life. It is one I pray over and over again. It is a form of discipline, for if I don’t pray this prayer, I will not keep my spiritual vitality. The prayer is simple and yet powerful. It is, “Lord, make me conscious of Your presence.” Being conscious of God’s presence makes all the difference in the world. Because David was aware that God was always with him, right beside him, he was not shaken during life’s struggles. Instead, God guided him and instructed his heart at night. How about you and I? What if today we were conscious of God right next to us? What if we knew that He was in the same room we were? What if we sensed that He heard our thoughts and prayers and would answer our questions? What if we experienced His comforting presence when we are under pressure? What if we knew He was present to help us when we had that challenging task? God is. God is always with us. Let us be conscious of His presence in all that we do today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, thank You for being with me constantly. Please make me aware of Your presence today. Help me to see how relevant You are to my life. Help me know that You are always with me, right beside me. Father, open my eyes to see You, my ears to hear You, and my heart to sense Your very presence.

All The Strength You Need

TODAY’S VERSE
I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Strength is the energy that God gives us to complete a task. It is what helps us endure to the end. Strength is also what helps us resist negative forces. What better place to get strength than from God? He can provide all the strength we need to do what He has called us to do. Need to love someone who is unlovely? Ask Him for strength. Need to forgive someone who hurt you deeply? Ask Him for strength. Have to do something that seems impossible? Ask Him for strength. Is fear crippling you, depression strangling you? Ask Him for strength. Paul said, “I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.” We can experience the same reality that Paul did. How? Paul answered that in his letter to the Ephesians. He wrote, “I pray that out of his glorious riches, he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.” Today, ask Him for strength.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Almighty God, I need Your strength. I can’t live the life You want me to without it. Please help me, Father. Give me all the strength I need to do all that You ask me to do. Today, strengthen me with Your power through the Holy Spirit, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
