He Is Our King

TODAY’S VERSE
“But though I have rescued you from your misery and distress, you have rejected your God today and have said, ‘No, we want a king instead!”
I Samuel 10:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How much do we really rely on God? How much do we really commune with Him and depend on Him for wisdom and direction? Think about it. We have pastors, radio preachers, counselors and bookstores full of books and magazines. That’s not counting conferences, colleges, Bible studies or Sunday School classes. With all this help, with all this representation of God, why would we ever need God at all? The people of God wanted a King. They wanted a physical representation of God, instead of God Himself. Now there is nothing wrong with having Pastors to teach and equip us, participating in small groups or enjoying Bible Study. The point is this. In all our searching, in all our seeking for answers, for all the comfort we are looking for, let us not forget God Himself.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am so sorry for putting other things above You. You are all my heart really needs. I come to You, my Lord and King, and ask that You would guide and direct me throughout this day.

Thinking Right

TODAY’S VERSE
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
II Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”
Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You have heard the saying, “You are what you eat.” I think in reality, “We are what we think.” Thoughts, whether conscious or on a more hidden level, affect the way we feel, perceive reality, act or react. Thoughts help create our moods, attitudes and beliefs. Anger, jealously, pride, envy, sadness, rebellion – these and many other negative emotions or behaviors have their root in the way we think. That is why it is so important to be aware and take responsibility for our thoughts. Paul instructs us to consider that our mind is in a spiritual war. Because of that we are to demolish any rouge thoughts that set itself up against Godly thinking. We are to take our thoughts captive and put it through a Godly filter so it becomes the way He would have us think. Paul also gives us a list of the kinds of thoughts we should dwell on. We should dwell on thoughts that are noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy. We have a choice; we can rule our thoughts or we can let them rule us. Today, let Jesus be the Lord of your thought life. Let Him help you with the way you think.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I bring you my mind and my sub-conscious mind. Help me bring all my thoughts into the light of Your Holy Spirit. Today, dear Lord, help me dwell on thoughts that are noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy.  In Jesus’ name.

He Knows My Name

TODAY’S VERSE
“I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.”
Isaiah 49:15-16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I am deeply moved every time I sing the worship song, “He Knows My Name”. It makes me think of today’s verse. The Israelites doubted the love of God and Isaiah reminded them that even if a mother forgets her own child, He will never forget them. In fact, Isaiah writes He has written our name on the palms of His hands. God knows my name? I am overwhelmed by the thought. How personal, how loving, how intimate. And yet I can’t help but wonder, “What else does God know about me?” He knows my situation. He knows my struggles. He knows my limitations. My fear and anxiety is no surprise to Him. He knows my anger and frustrations. He knows my weaknesses. He knows and loves me, but do I know Him? Do I? Do I know His name? Do I know Him as the God Most High, the God who sees, the all-sufficient one, the provider and the Lord who heals? Do I know Him as my banner and my peace? Do I know Him as my creator, shepherd and my righteousness? Today, take joy in knowing that the God above all other names knows yours.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for knowing and loving me. Thank You for knowing my name and caring so deeply for me. Help me know and love You more.

Light Or Darkness?

TODAY’S VERSE
“Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!”
Matthew 6:22-23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I have studied psychology all my life and I have never heard a truer statement than what Jesus said in this passage. How deceived we can become. We look at what we think is reality and all the time we have filters that we are looking through. Anger, sadness, jealousy, fear, abandonment, hurt and a hundred other emotions, attitudes, perceptions and impressions skew our view of what is true. We think we are seeing in the light and all the time it is darkness. And Jesus warned us, “If the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!” That is why He gave us the Holy Spirit and His word. The Holy Spirit is our teacher and guide, showing us the way. The word of God is our filter in which to see the world. Together they keep us in the light. Today, come to God. Ask Him to help you see the truth of your own situation. Ask Him to be your guide so that you will know which way to go. May His light penetrate your darkness and set you free.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how I need You. I need Your light to penetrate my darkness. Guide me, lead me, show me the way to go, I pray. In Jesus’ name.

Show Me the Right Path

TODAY’S VERSE
“Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow. Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. Remember, O LORD, your compassion and unfailing love.”
Psalms 25:4-6

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life is a journey. We are not settlers in this world. Heaven is our final destination. Instead we are called to go through life as an ambassador of heaven, a soldier in God’s army, a sojourner commanded to give away God’s peace and love. And the journey can get messy. That is why it is so important to learn to navigate, to solve problems and to discern what to do next. David is crying out that God would direct his path. But notice that it is a special kind of leading. He said, “Lead me by your truth and teach me.” Jesus said that truth would set us free. So much of our hardships, misdirection and hurts in this life are due to deception and denial. We need to pray that God would show us the truth and then teach us through each experience. This is how we derive our faith and hope in Him. They are learned behaviors that God imparts as we are led by His Spirit in each situation we find ourselves in. Life is a process. We succeed and make progress by learning. David learned to put his hope in God and trusted that God’s compassion and love would not fail. That is what we need to do. May God lead you by His truth today and point out the road for you to follow. May He teach you more about the depths of His compassion and unfailing love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your guidance today. Show me what road to follow. Guide me by Your truth and teach me to trust You. I put my hope in You and your compassionate unfailing love.

Wisdom

TODAY’S VERSE
“I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.”
Ephesians 1:16-17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Spiritual wisdom and insight. It is perhaps the most important trait we could ask God for. It was so important that Paul prayed constantly that God would give it to the church. When God asked Solomon to ask for anything he wanted, Solomon asked for wisdom in order to rule the people. God was happy with this decision and gave Solomon “a wise and understanding heart.” We need no less. Everyday we face circumstances and make decisions. How often have we relied on our own understanding instead of seeking God and the wisdom that He has? James tells us that if we are lacking wisdom all we need to do is ask God. David tells us not to lean on our own understanding but seek God and He will direct us. Today, ask God for wisdom. Ask Him for insight and understanding. Seek Him, talk to Him, listen to Him and He will give you all the wisdom you need.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You asking for Your wisdom and insight. Guide me, direct me, give me all the wisdom I need to make it through this day. In Jesus’ name.

Lead My Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
“May the Lord lead your hearts into a full understanding and expression of the love of God and the patient endurance that comes from Christ.”
II Thessalonians 3:5

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It will take a life time to fully mature in Christ. Although our salvation is immediate, maturing in Christ is a process. But we don’t see it that way. We want instant spirituality and here is the real twist, we want it without the spiritual discipline of prayer, meditation and scripture reading. Nor do we want to be busy with ministry. Instead we have our life to lead, with all its important tasks and duties. Is it a wonder that we don’t know what Jesus is talking about when He says that He has come to give us an abundant life? This is why Paul prays that the Lord would lead our heart into a full understanding of who He is. An understanding that comes when we experience God actually expressing His love towards us. It is personal and real. And the result of God leading us into a personal understanding of God’s love is the hope, faith, trust and confidence that produces patience endurance. What a gift, and it is yours for the asking. Might your prayer be today, Lord lead my heart. 

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, please lead my heart into a full personal understanding of your love. Help me today, to be purposeful in knowing you and living for you in all I do. In Jesus Name.

Lead My Heart

Taste The Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
“Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.”
Psalms 34:8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever stopped to think how many different ways you can experience the Lord? Worship is multi-dimensional. With the use of our mind, God has allowed us the capacity to really know Him and love Him. Certainly we can read His word. God does speak to us through the scriptures. What He has written connects with us in a personal way. We can sense His presence. He is the God of all comfort and the Holy Spirit bares witness with our spirit that He is God. We can hear His voice. Whether it is a still soft voice deep in our soul or, as some have heard, an audible voice, God speaks to us. We can see His glory. Either through a beautiful sunset or a significant moment, we can see evidence of God. We can also use our inner mind and see Him with the eyes of our heart. When Jesus healed people, many others would come up to Him and touch Him. Have you ever reached out to Him, lifted your hands and experienced a moment as if you touched Him? We can sense that God is weighty, that He has substance. David said that we can taste and see that the Lord is good. When we commune with God we can know that He is real. God wants us to know Him, really know Him in many different and personal ways. Today, determine to start spending time with God in silence and worship Him with the different senses. Love Him, worship Him, and experience Him today. Oh that you would taste of the Lord and know that He is good.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I give myself to You. I want to know You in all of Your fullness. Help me worship You in new and fresh ways. Enlarge my capacity to know you, that I might love you more and more.

Your Heart’s Desire

TODAY’S VERSE
“May he grant your heart’s desires and make all your plans succeed.”
Psalms 20:4

TODAY’S THOUGHT
At first glance this verse sounds like it came straight from a Chinese Fortune Cookie factory. You read it and think, “Did I see this on a success motivation poster?” But then, if you take the time to remember that this is God’s word, you start to meditate on this phrase and find that it is full of deep meaning. First I stop to think about the responsibility this verse puts on me as a person who dreams and has desires. When is the last time I desired a God-sized desire? What have I desired that would be worthy of God’s consideration, let alone His blessing? What do I want to see happen that would possibly be aligned with the will of God? More than desire, what have I spent time on and planned for the Kingdom of God? What success am I asking for that would be worthy of God’s favor? Finally, who will get the glory if our desires came true and our plans succeeded? God put you and I here to live for Him. He wants us to use our heart to desire great and mighty things for Him. We are His ambassadors and He chooses to live His will through our lives. Let us plan and desire with all our heart great and mighty things for His Glory.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, birth in my heart a desire to do Your will with my life. Give me a dream. Give me a passion. And then Father, help these desires, passions and dreams turn into a plan. Might the plan become a reality, through Your mighty power and for Your Glory and honor. In Jesus Name.
