His Word

TODAY’S VERSE
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”
II Timothy 3:16-17

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How often do we pray for direction? How many times do we just long to hear God’s voice? How many times a week do we cry out for wisdom? The good news is that God has created a way to speak to us, give us wisdom and guide us. It is through His written word, the Bible. Paul was telling Timothy how important the Bible was. He shared that the Bible is inspired by God for the purpose of teaching us, convicting us, correcting us and equipping us for His service. There is no other source that God uses to communicate to us more effectively. Through the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit, God is able to speak to us in a personal and intimate way. It is easy to get busy and a day goes by, then two, pretty soon a week, then a month. Before you know it, you are not spending any time getting to know God or His word. We were not meant to live life without the word of God. It is like going through life with a hole in your heart. Instead, let God fill the emptiness. Get a Bible today and put it near your favorite chair. And then each day start spending a few minutes letting God teach you. He will. He longs to fellowship with you and teach you His word, but you have to make the first move. Why not start today?

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for the Bible. I know that it was written to give me wisdom and guidance. Help me to read it, learn it and use it in my everyday experience. Teach me Father to love Your word that I might live for You.
AMEN

Lead Me

TODAY’S VERSE
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
Proverb 3:5-6

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When I was trained in wilderness school the goal was to teach us to be a good guide. They took us on courses and training where our lives were literally in the hand of the person leading us. The training guide knew where we were and how to get us where we were going. They knew the terrain and how to survive any and every condition. A wilderness is a wild and unpredictable environment and a good guide will get you through it. We need a guide to get us through the mountains and valleys of this life. We need a guide to lead us through the difficult times, when we seem lost and all is hopeless. Solomon says to, “Trust in the Lord with all our heart” and He will direct our path. More specifically, Jesus promised that He will give us the Holy Spirit to be our guide. God, through the Holy Spirit, will lead us into all truth. And in the wilderness, truth is King! There is no room for error; you need the truth to guide you every step of the way. So, where are you today? Where are you going? How will you get there? You need the Holy Spirit to be your guide. Proverbs warns us not to lean on our own understanding but to acknowledge our need for God. Come to God today and ask Him to lead you. Surrender to His guidance and let Him direct your paths. Might the verse of an old Sunday School song be your prayer today, “My God knows the way through the wilderness, all I have to do is follow.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, You know how I need You to direct my path today. I can’t do it by myself. I surrender to you and ask that you would lead me through the power of Your Holy Spirit. Guide me, direct me, lead me this day. AMEN

Thoughts

TODAY’S VERSE
“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
II Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The battle is in our mind. Truth verses lies. False assumptions verses God’s promises. Negative predictions verses faith. Roots of bitterness, jealously, fear and shame verses the mind of Christ. And though all these strongholds can be demolished by God’s power, how much better if we never let negative thinking get that far. We can, if we follow Paul’s advice and “demolish arguments and every pretence that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” And how often a battle begins with a simple thought. We get a negative thought and instead of renouncing it, we make a subtle agreement with it. “God doesn’t care.” “I can’t do it.” We use words like “never, always and every” and instead of renouncing it, we agree. Oh, not a strong agreement, but if we don’t disagree with the thought, what are we really doing? A thought left unchecked and soon we begin to ruminate on it. We start to build on the thought and soon we have a stronghold. We are in a battle. Our mind is the battle field. God wants us to be full of love, joy, peace, patience and kindness. We can only do that if we renounce and correct negative unbiblical thinking. Today, commit your mind to God. Let His Holy Spirit work with your thinking and bring it into alignment with His word.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your presence in my life. I commit my thinking to you. Holy Spirit rule in my mind. Help me know and believe Your truth so I can make all my thoughts obedient to Christ.
AMEN

God’s Word

TODAY’S VERSE
“I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”
Psalms 119:11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Insight, inspiration, hope, wisdom, confidence, direction, correction all this and more is found in God’s word. One of the roles of the Holy Spirit is to take the scriptures and make it relevant to our life. The Psalmist experienced this living word and knew if He would learn it, meditate on it and let it effect who he really was, that it would result in the kind of behavior that was pleasing to God. Today, we can have the same experience. Spend time in God’s word. Meditate on it. Listen to what God has to say and let His word sink deep into your heart. If you do, you will be able to say with the Psalmist, “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, as I read Your word, help it sink deep into my heart. Help me hear You and really understand how You want me to live. Inspire me, guide me and empower me by Your word I pray.
AMEN

What Do You See?

TODAY’S VERSE
“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.”
Zephaniah 3:17 (ESV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What do you see? A lot of it depends on what you are looking through. Each of us come to the Scriptures with different lenses. We see through our experiences, beliefs, senses and personality. So although scripture is true, we may have a skewed view of it. For example, in today’s verse what do you believe? When you close your eyes, do you see God as a mighty one who will save you? Or do you have some doubts as to His ability or desire? Do you see God as rejoicing over you with gladness? Is He exulting over you with loud singing? Is He ecstatic in His love toward you? Or do you have a hard time feeling like a recipient of that kind of attention from God? Finally, can you picture God quieting you with His love? Does the very thought of God bring peace to your heart? God’s word is true, but unless we read it and challenge our thinking, we will not align our beliefs with God’s. Today, ask God to help make His word clear to you and start to see what He wants you to.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me read Your word. Holy Spirit, help me to see what You really want me to see and to believe it with all of my heart. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Listen To God

TODAY’S VERSE
“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,”
Isaiah 30:21 (ESV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to hear someone and not listen to a word they are saying. We get so engrossed into what we are doing that we half listen. How many times are we that way with God? We get up in the morning and barely say, “Hi” to Jesus and then bust out the door. We may spend some time reading and offering up prayer requests, but do we listen to God? God wants a relationship, He desires to communicate with us. He has answers to questions like, “Lord, what do You want to say to me?” “Jesus what are You praying for me?” There is a whole new spiritual experience awaiting for us if we just stop to listen. Today, spend time with God and your ears too will hear a word, a word from God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need a word from You. Help me today to stop and listen. I say Samuel of old, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”
AMEN

Renew My Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting
away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
2 Corinthians 4:16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever been to the bed side of someone dying from a dreadful disease? It is easy to lose heart when we begin to waste away. Skin and bones, unable to take nourishment, our body finally gives in. But there is another form of wasting away. It is the wasting away of the soul. The inward person, who we really are, in despair, confusion and helplessness. This is truly tragic. Our body is but a temple for who we really are and all that God intends us to be. And so, even though we waste away physically, Paul reminds us that it is crucial that we don’t lose heart. Instead we are to renew ourself inwardly day by day. Today, spend time with God, meditate on His word, let His promises soak deep into your soul and replenish your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need You to renew my heart. Replenish my soul with Your word and Your love. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit I pray.
AMEN

Stronger Faith

TODAY’S VERSE
“Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God.”
Romans 4:20 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How does that happen? How does one’s faith grow stronger? Abraham knew God and he was constantly being challenged by his life’s circumstances yet his faith grew stronger. How did this happen? Paul shares, “Abraham never wavered in believing God’s promise.” God called Abraham and promised that through him He was going to start a new nation. Hard times came, “God promised.” Detours, “God promised.” Danger and peril, “God promised.” And each time Abraham remembered God’s promise, his faith grew. Peter said it this way, “He (God) has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” God’s promises are true, but they do us no good if we don’t know them. Today, get to know God’s word and start to believe for yourself.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me know and believe Your promises. Help my faith grow stronger, even today. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Speak Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
‘“So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.”’
I Samuel 3:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever put yourself in the Samuel’s position? Have you been at a place where you really desire to hear a word from God? God loves you and wants to communicate with you. He speaks through His word, the Bible. He also speaks to your heart through the Holy Spirit. Dallas Willard in his book, Hearing God, concludes, “Direction will always be made available to the mature disciple if without it serious harm would befall people concerned in the matter or the cause of Christ. If I am right, the obedient, listening heart, mature in the things of God, will in such a case find the voice plain and the message clear, as with the experiences of the friends of God recorded in the Bible. This is a claim that must be tested by experience, and anyone willing to meet the conditions and learn from failures as well as successes can put it to the test.” Today, open your heart to hearing from God. Commit yourself to spend time with God in Bible reading, meditation and prayer. Build a deep and trusting relationship with Him and ask Him share His heart with you. Say with Samuel, “’Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” When you come to God in this way, you will hear from Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I give my heart to You and desire to know you better. I desire to hear from You. I long to discern Your direction in my life. I come and say with Samuel, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” AMEN

Love Others

TODAY’S VERSE
“But while knowledge makes us feel important, it is love that strengthens the church.”
I Corinthians 8:1 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Knowing the word of God is very important. Peter tells us to, “Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.” But we can know all about God and yet not be loving. And without love, the Church will not be what God desires it to be. Paul lets us know this in no uncertain terms. He writes. “If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.” Today, let’s love the way God wants us to.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am so glad that I know You. Help me to love the way You want me to.
AMEN
