Love Others

TODAY’S VERSE
“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.”
Matthew 7:12 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Can it get any clearer? Love is the essence of Christianity. It is God’s message to mankind. He loves us! And it is our calling to follow His example. We must love each other. Jesus takes all of the law in the Old Testament and boils it down to its essence and what does He get? He gets love. What does God require of us? He wants us to treat others in the very same way that we want to be treated. We are to love others in very real and practical ways. When we do, God is glorified. He is honored and people are drawn to Him, the One who loves us so much that we can’t help but love others in return.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for loving me so much. Thank You for Your grace and mercy in my life. Help me love others in the same way that You love me. The same way I would want them to treat me. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

My Own Eye

 TODAY’S VERSE
“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.”
Matthew 7:3-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
I don’t agree with everything Freud wrote. There is, however, one of his observations that I think has some truth to it. Freud wrote about “projection,” the action of pointing out faults in others that we have our self.” Have you ever caught yourself criticizing someone and suddenly realize that you exhibit the same behavior? Jesus warned us about pointing out other people’s faults and ignoring our own. He said not to point out the little failings in other people while we have huge issues to deal with. He mastered the use of hyperbole with the comparison of a speck in another person’s eye while we have this huge beam in our own. How funny this must have sounded to His audience, yet how true! We so often take offense at other’s shortcomings when we have glaring inconsistencies in our own life. Today, let us examine our self. Let us come before God and ask Him to point out our own “sins” and deal with them before we worry about someone else’s behavior.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for judging others. Help me to bring myself to you and allow Your Holy Spirit to work on my behavior. Lord, make me more like You.
AMEN

God’s Power

TODAY’S VERSE
“I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.”
I Corinthians 2:4-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
We like to move toward balance. Homeostasis, a relatively stable state of equilibrium, seems to work in many systems. But sometimes that is not the best move. Balance is good if you want to have normalcy. But many times, if you want to reach worthwhile goals, you have to unbalance a few things. Does the professional athlete balance his or her practice time to other activities? No, they are consumed with their sport and devote many hours to that single pursuit. Soon or later, if you are going to excel at something, you must become a little unbalanced. Paul was trying to share Jesus with people groups that never heard of Christ before. He was starting churches from scratch and he learned that the spiritual life must not be balanced with worldly wisdom. There needs to be a radical dependence on God to do mighty things, if you are going to see His Kingdom come. Sure you need to ask for wisdom, but it is spiritual discernment that you should seek. You need to move in faith and hope in the spiritual realm, not logic and theory in the earthly. Today, what are you depending on God’s power for? What big hairy audacious goal are you trusting the Holy Spirit to accomplish in and through you? Paul trusted in the power of God, today do the same.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I must confess that many times conventional wisdom tells me to move in one direction, when I know I should trust You for greater things. Lord, I want my life to make a difference. I want to see Your kingdom come as a result of Your Holy Spirit’s guidance in my life. Lead me, use me, I pray.
AMEN

A Clear Conscience

TODAY’S VERSE
“Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.”
Hebrews 9:14 (NLT)

“Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.”
I Timothy 1:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
If we want to live a joyful Christian life then we need to keep our conscience clear. We have a large propensity toward rationalizing away our attitudes and behavior. We will do anything to keep from feeling guilt over something we have done. We bury any negative emotions and before you know it our conscience has been seared. But the truth is we end up paying a toll for our lack of repentance. Before you know it, we are like the person in today’s passage, our faith becomes shipwrecked. Instead, God made us for grace. Christ is the perfect sacrifice for our sins and His blood shed on Calvary has made it possible to have our conscience clear for all of eternity. All He asks is that we repent, confess our sins to Him and accept His forgiveness and unconditional love. What is it that has alienated you from God or other people? Today, bring it to God. Confess it and ask His forgiveness. Keep your conscience clear.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me keep my conscience clear with You. Convict me of sin and by Your grace, lead me to repentance. Thank You, that if I confess my sins, You are faithful and willing to forgive me of every transgression.
AMEN

Comfort

TODAY’S VERSE
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.”
II Corinthians 1:3-4 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Stress is in all of our lives. There is pressure from all sides. Relationships, finances, health, how do we get any relief? Where can we go to get help? Paul knew. He wrote, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles.” Paul was emphatic, God is compassionate. Not only compassionate but puts His compassion into action by comforting us. It is hard to pray sometimes. Will God heal? Will we find the answer we seek? We don’t know all the variables, we can’t always explain the way things turn out, but we can count on one thing. He will comfort! He will, in His great compassion, visit us and bring a comfort to our heart that is supernatural. More than that, God will orchestrate many of His followers to comfort us as well. That is His plan. When we are comforted by His grace and mercy, God wants us to go and comfort others that He brings our way. We are to comfort others in the same way we were helped. But somehow we have forgotten this. Somehow the church has traded our role from hospital, shelter and sanctuary for a country club? We have all sorts of programs for ourselves, but we don’t bring comfort to the world. God has commanded us to take His love to the streets. That is what He did. Today, bring your own burdens to the Lord. Let Him comfort you. And when He does, go with the same compassion He had and go comfort someone else.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I pray that You, in all of Your compassion, would comfort me in my struggles. And as You do, I ask that You would bring people into my life that I could comfort in return. Thank You for Your love. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Really Knowing God

TODAY’S VERSE
“I know the greatness of the Lord.”
Psalms 135:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Have you ever tried to describe the Grand Canyon to someone who hasn’t been there? Pictures help, your descriptions can get them excited but nothing replaces being there. Until they stand on one of the rims and look across the grand expanse for themselves, they will not know its majesty. It is the same way with today’s passage. David writes, “I know the greatness of the Lord.” This was a first hand, observational knowledge. He knew the greatest of the Lord because He had seen the Lord in action. It was relational knowledge. He knew the greatness of the Lord because he spent quiet time with Him. It was experiential knowledge. He knew the greatness of the Lord because He stepped out in faith trusting God for all his needs. Today, don’t just settle for head knowledge about God. Stop and know the greatness of the Lord!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me to know You. Help me know Your greatness. Might Your Holy Spirit lead me into a deeper knowledge of You.
AMEN

Patience

TODAY’S VERSE
“Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience.”
Colossians 1:11 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
In his letter to the Colossians, Paul admonishes the Christians to “live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way.” He then tells them how. He says to get our strength from God’s power so we can exercise “great endurance and patience.” Endurance and patience pleases God. Patience is easier accomplished when there is hope. Where there seems to be a sense of fairness, it is easier to endure. But how often do we have that luxury? It is during difficult situations where all seems lost, where hope is nowhere to be found, that we must trust God and be strengthened in a way that only His power could accomplish. We come to Him, with all His glorious might, and choose to deliberately be patient and endure. It is an act of faith, one that is pleasing to Him. Today, trust God and His power, put your situation into His hands and choose to be patient and endure.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, help me trust in Your power and might and exhibit patience and endurance today in all I do.
AMEN

Trust and Obey

TODAY’S VERSE
“Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong. And do everything with love.”
I Corinthians 16:13-14 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
What a “to do” list? Do you need something to do today? Try today’s passage. What a list, and such an important one for our spiritual vitality. What I am encouraged about is that God would not ask us to do something that He will not help us with. This is within our grasp. All we need to do is focus, ask God for His help and then be as diligent as possible. He will guide us. He will give us the strength and power to do what He has asked of us. Today, be on guard against spiritual apathy, attacks and adversaries. While you are on guard, stand firm on His word and your faith in what He has said and who He is. When trouble comes remember who God is and what He as asked us to do and be courageous in your attempt to be strong. Finally, if all else fails allow Him to work through you and do everything today with love! God is good and He will help you do what He has asked you to do. Simply trust and obey.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You that You will provide all the help and strength I need today. Help me to be on my guard and stand firm in my faith. I need Your help to be courageous and strong. Lord please help me do everything I do today with love. I ask this in the name of Jesus.
AMEN

What Do You Really Need?

TODAY’S VERSE
“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
II Corinthians 9:8 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Need. That is certainly a relative word. We have taken the word “need” and have turned it into everything from a wish list to a whim. Larry Crabb addresses this in his book, “The Pressure’s Off.” He writes about what we really need. He writes, “Nothing wrong with desiring safe airplane flights and warn marriages and a decent income. But none of these things, none of our hopes for a “Better Life of Blessings”, represents God’s priority agenda… We need only to be safe from any power that opposes God’s agenda for our lifes.” And what is that agenda that we need? Crabb shares the three needs that God wants for us; radical forgiveness, supernatural love and spiritual might. And Paul shares that God is able to grant you these needs because through His grace God will provide all of the forgiveness, love and might that you will need in order to be involved in His good work. Today, might we lay aside those “other needs” that we think are so important and ask God to meet our real needs of forgiveness, love and spiritual might.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need You and Your spiritual provisions of forgiveness, love and spiritual might more than anything else in the world. Help meet my real needs today. I pray this in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

His Will

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”’
Matthew 11:28 (NLT)

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33 (NASB)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
You would think as Christians we would put God’s will above our own. But that is not always the case. We often find ourself assuming God’s will, not asking Him for it. God’s ways are not always our ways. Life has so many variables, that we must seek His face in order to know His will. Jesus said to come to Him when we are weary and carry heavy burdens. He said to seek His kingdom and righteousness before anything else. If we want to live out God’s will in our life, then we must seek God. A quarterback has the same goal as his coach. They both want to win the game. But the Coach is better versed in the game. He has more experience and a more comprehensive view of the whole game. If the quarterback is going to do his best, he needs to work in harmony with the coach. How much more should we align our behavior and attitudes with God Almighty? A hurtful situation, a wayward son, a sudden illness, a loss of a job. Life has many twists and turns. When they come, stop and seek God’s face. Let Him know your thoughts, your apprehensions, your fears and frustrations. Come to Him, seek Him first and He will direct your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess that I do “my own thing” so many times. I do not take the time to know your will. I just assume that what I am doing is the “right” thing. Forgive me. Help me to stop when I am tempted to run in a certain direction. Help me to seek You first. Help me to share with You my inward thoughts and feelings so You can show me Your will.
AMEN
