Grace, Truth and Time

TODAY’S  VERSE
“The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Jesus came to earth to be our Savior. He came to give us an abundant life. The way He does this is through the very expression of who He is. We see this in today’s passage. Jesus, or as John calls Him, the Word, came from the Father, took on a human form and was full of grace and truth. It is grace that saves us. Grace that sustains us. God’s grace that forgives us. But it is His truth that corrects us, directs us and as Jesus said, “Sets us free.” Dr. Henry Cloud talks about this in his book, “Changes That Heal.” He claims that it is the combination of God’s grace and truth that gives us the balance we need to live an emotionally healthy life. Grace without truth would never lead to true change. Truth without grace would never allow us the space we need to fail and start over. We need both. Dr. Cloud adds one more ingredient. He adds time. How wise. When we take the grace of God to forgive, the truth of God to guide and we add time, true maturity results. Today may we rejoice in God’s wonderful plan for our spiritual growth.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, how I thank You for Your wonderful amazing grace that loves me unconditionally. Thank You for Your truth that has as its aim, my maturity. And Father, thank You for the time and patience that You have given me in order that I may mature in You.
AMEN

Honest With God

TODAY’S VERSE
“Pay attention to my prayer, because I speak the truth.”
Psalms 17:1 (NCV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
You would think being honest with God would be natural, but it isn’t. Oh, its not that we tell God some big fat lie. It is more like we omit the truth. We pray, “Lord, help me, I need money for my bills.” Perhaps a more honest prayer would be, “Lord, please show me where I can be better at my finances.” We pray that God would help us with a sour relationship, when we should be praying for our behavior and attitude toward the person. We ask God to forgive our sins, but not the wisdom and discipline to change our behavior. Sometimes we would be better off starting our prayers with, “Lord, what do You want me to pray about?” and then wait to see what God challenges us with. This kind of honest, life changing prayer only comes from a sincere relationship with God. As we spend more time with Him, we will find it easier to pray in an open, honest and fresh way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me share with You in an honest and open way. I want nothing between us. I want to serve You with all my heart and pray that honesty will be at the core of our relationship.
AMEN

Peace To You

TODAY’S VERSE
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, will keep me safe.”
Psalms 4:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
The Bible is full of the message of peace. It is God’s will that we live in peace. Now peace can be a relative term. Some would limit it to a “peaceful situation”. Yet many people live in a safe and friendly environment, yet live in desperation. The kind of peace that the Bible emphasizes most is a state of mind. It is the inward peace that comes from knowing God is sovereign and that we can trust Him. It is the ability to delay gratification, solutions, answers or understanding and substitute it with hope, trust and faith in God’s ultimate goodness and love for us. So today, choose peace. May peace fill your day and take you through the night.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I ask for You to flood my heart and my soul with Your peace. Today, may I sense You love and presence and rest myself in You.
AMEN

My Own Eye

 TODAY’S VERSE
“And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.”
Matthew 7:3-5 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
I don’t agree with everything Freud wrote. There is, however, one of his observations that I think has some truth to it. Freud wrote about “projection,” the action of pointing out faults in others that we have our self.” Have you ever caught yourself criticizing someone and suddenly realize that you exhibit the same behavior? Jesus warned us about pointing out other people’s faults and ignoring our own. He said not to point out the little failings in other people while we have huge issues to deal with. He mastered the use of hyperbole with the comparison of a speck in another person’s eye while we have this huge beam in our own. How funny this must have sounded to His audience, yet how true! We so often take offense at other’s shortcomings when we have glaring inconsistencies in our own life. Today, let us examine our self. Let us come before God and ask Him to point out our own “sins” and deal with them before we worry about someone else’s behavior.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for judging others. Help me to bring myself to you and allow Your Holy Spirit to work on my behavior. Lord, make me more like You.
AMEN

Treasure

TODAY’S VERSE
“Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”
Matthew 6:21 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Where are our priorities? What is really important to us? We can pretend that we believe certain spiritual truths but what we really treasure usually gives us away. Jesus is warning us that it is easy to get caught up in this life and not really look at the whole picture. We are not just part of this physical world. We are part of a much larger system. We are part of the Spiritual realm. We are connected with eternity and therefore need to integrate what we believe in this life with a Heavenly perspective. The questions that we need to ask our self is, “What do we really care for?” “What is really important to us?” “What do we treasure?” When we answer these questions we will find our heart. Then we need to ask ourselves a really hard question. “Does our heart reflect Christ’s values or the worlds?” If we are going to follow Christ, if we are going to be His representative in this world, then our heart needs to reflect what is important to Him. Today, might we check our heart’s priority and realign what’s really important to us to be more in tune with Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me love what You love. Help me live with Your priorities foremost in my thinking. Help live for You today.
AMEN

Self Awareness

TODAY’S VERSE
“You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.”
Revelation 3:17 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
In his book “Practicing Greatness” Reggie McNeal gives seven disciplines to improve our spirituality. The first one is the discipline of self awareness. This is critical if we are going to live the way Christ asks us to. Why? Because it is so easy to deceive ourselves. Look at the Pharisees. They thought they were doing everything God required of them to be holy and yet Jesus constantly pointed out how far they missed the target of true Holiness. It was that way with the early church. In Revelation John wrote what God told him to write about the churches. When it came to the church in Laodicea, John pointed out that they lacked self awareness. Because they were rich and had many things, they felt they didn’t lack anything. However, God pointed out to them that they were deceived. In reality they were spiritually wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked. The good news is that we don’t have to be this way; but unless we are aware of our spiritual condition, we will never take the steps to correct ourselves. So how do we know? How can we find out where we are spiritually? Insight comes when we spend time with God. When we open ourselves to hear His voice, read His word and spend time in introspection. As we humble ourselves before God, spend time with Him and listen to His leading, He will guide us. He will correct us. He will help us discern what we need to change. Today, talk to God. Ask Him to make you aware of your spiritual condition. Might we pray with David when he wrote, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me become more self aware of my true spiritual attitudes. Help me to be honest with myself and with You. Help me see if there is any offensive way in me and then lead me in a more spiritual path. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Overcomer

TODAY’S VERSE
“You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”
I John 4:4 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
The early church was persecuted for their faith. Many were ostracized from society, living in poverty and starvation. Others were imprisoned. Many martyred for their faith. But ironically, this persecution caused the church to flourish. It forced them to band together and have a bond of love that the world has never seen again. It was an infectious witness to those around them. Instead what was more of a spiritual battle was Satan’s battle for the mind of the early believers. It was an all out assault on the truth of the Gospel. During the time this passage was written there many people challenging the message of Christianity. There were some who said that the death of Jesus was not enough that we still had to obey the Jewish law. Others said that Christ was not the real Messiah, or Christ was not the real Son of God. Today it is the same story. Neil Anderson, in his book, “Bondage Breaker” reminds us that our battle with Satan is not a power struggle but a truth encounter. Satan comes to us as the father of lies. We are assaulted by one lie after another. Doubts and half truths constantly attack our mind. But we need not despair. Why? Because John wrote that we are from God and have overcome all these falsehoods and lies of Satan. How is that so? Because Christ in you is greater than Satan and his spirits of deception that is in the world.” Today, when lies, doubts, and half truths come your way, resist them. Tell them to flee from your mind and focus on the greater thing, the truth of Christ and His love for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank You Lord for Your strength and power. Thank You for protecting me. But also Lord, thank You for Your truth and the fact that You are greater in me than Satan and his lies in the world. Lord fill me with Your truth.
AMEN

Know Him

TODAY’S VERSE
“May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.”
II Peter 1:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Are you growing in your knowledge of Jesus Christ? Have you been spending time reading the Bible in order to know what Christ’s agenda is? Have you examined His life in order to follow His example? Do you have a heart knowledge of Christ? Do you spend time in His presence? Do you know how He feels about you? Do you see life, with all its people and situations, with the eyes of Christ? God’s design was that you have more than a superficial knowledge of Christ. It is His desire that you grow in what you know and experience of Christ. As you do, you will have more and more peace in your life. You will understand more and more about the unending grace that He has for you. Today, spend time and get to know Christ better. Learn about Him as you learn from Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, help me to know You better and better. Help me learn more about Your desires and passions. Help me know Your love, grace and peace. Teach me, guide me, instruct me I pray. Help me grow more and more in You.
AMEN

Hungry?

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry.’”
John 6:35 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Have you ever been really hungry? Have you ever had a craving for a certain kind of food? Hunger is a tremendous human drive. Jesus said that He was the “bread of life” and if we believe in Him, we won’t be hunger again. But He wasn’t talking about alleviating our physical hunger. Instead, Jesus is talking about another kind of hunger; a hunger just as real. It is a spiritual hunger, a hunger of the soul. Just like a physical hunger, you can have many soulful cravings. These craving come from the needs of our heart. You may have a taste for love to fill your heart. Many people have a hunger for inner peace, joy and happiness. But there are also hungers that are born out of unfulfilled needs like a hunger for recognition, fame or glory. There are more base unspiritual appetites too, like lust, greed and materialism. Jesus knows our real hungers. He knows what will really satisfy our deepest needs. So today, hear the words of Jesus, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry.” Come to Jesus. Feed on His teachings and the personal relationship that He offers to you. He is the only one that can truly satisfy your hunger.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for giving me a spiritual appetite. I really need You to feed my soul. I need Your bread of life to feed and nourish the deepest parts of me. Thank You that You promised if I come to You, I will never be spiritually hungry. I come to You now, dear Jesus. Feed me I pray.
AMEN

Realization

TODAY’S VERSE
“On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.”
John 14:20 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
A realization is different than knowing something. You can “know” how difficult something may be and later explain, “I never realized how much work it was really going to be!” Knowing can be academic or theoretical whereas realization is experiential knowledge. True realization is an awakening. It is an “aha” moment. We can “know” all about Christ, but realizing His presence is something totally different. Jesus is explaining that because He rose again from the dead, we should realize He is equal with God the Father. Jesus is also saying that because we believe He has a special relationship to God the Father, that we should likewise believe that He has a special relationship with us. As God the Father is “in” Jesus, Jesus is “in” us. Here is the crux of the matter. When are we going to start living as if the Almighty God of the Universe is living in us? When are we going to realize all that is ours because Jesus Christ is our Savior? It is not too late. Today, meditate on God’s love for you and His desire to live in and through you. Ask Him to help you realize what that should mean to you and the way you live.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank you for your presence in my life. Thank You for making me Your child. I pray that today I may come into a full realization of what it means to have You alive in me.
AMEN
