Faith

TODAY’S VERSE
‘“If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!’ they complained. ‘Why is the LORD taking us to this country only to have us die in battle? Our wives and our little ones will be carried off as plunder! Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?”’
Numbers 14:2-3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Faith is not easy. Here is a classic struggle where the children of God expected one thing and ended up with something else. They left Egypt where they were slaves, hoping for a land of their own. And now, because of the report of “giants in the land”, they were afraid for their lives. All they could think of was returning to slavery! Isn’t that like fear? All we can see is negativity. But not faith. Faith sees God not giants. Faith sees the freedom not slavery. Faith sees the promised land not a wilderness. While the other spies saw giants in the land, Joshua and Caleb said, “The land we traveled through and explored is a wonderful land! And if the LORD is pleased with us, he will bring us safely into that land and give it to us. It is a rich land flowing with milk and honey.” The people reacted in fear; Joshua and Caleb reacted in faith. Today, no matter what your circumstances, choose faith.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me to see through the eyes of faith. Help me to trust You and not fear. Give me courage and strength, I pray.
AMEN

Alive

TODAY’S VERSE
“The LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”
Genesis 2:7 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When asked, a group of people who suffered with addictions, gave the answer to what they “felt” just before they gave into the craving of their addiction. What was the trigger, what was the deep painful impulse that was driving them? Some of the answers were, “worthlessness, lost, disconnection, lack of existence, invisible, bad, evil, void, abandoned, alone, powerless, wrong, not breathing, non being, humiliated, ashamed and unloved.” Then the same group was asked to visualize taking the drug and verbalize what the drug did for them. What was the promise, what was the relief? They wrote:
“self discovery, focus for my life, meaning, surrender, will, acceptance by group, feeling of being alive, freedom, acceptance of desire, living in the moment.” Now here is the catch. Although the desire for positive meaning is real, the lie is that drugs do not give them the solution. It only mocks it. It is like the song, “Looking for love in all the wrong places.” It is God that gives the “breath of life.” Jesus provides real meaning. The healing power of God and Christian fellowship is the answer to our deepest pain! God has created us for life. We are not supposed to go around feeling like a non-being. Instead Paul prays that we would have the power to understand how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Christ’s love for us is. It is in experiencing God’s love for us that we are made complete with all the “fullness of life and power that comes from God.” Today, let the love of Christ breathe life deep into your soul and make you alive.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I want to live, really live. Help me find true meaning and purpose in Your love for me. Fill me with Your life-giving breath. Fill me with Your Spirit and make me more alive today than I have ever been.
AMEN

Cry Out For Mercy

TODAY’S VERSE
“Listen to my prayer for mercy as I cry out to you for help, as I lift my hands toward your holy sanctuary.” – “Praise the LORD! For he has heard my cry for mercy. The LORD is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.”
Psalms 28:2, 7-8

TODAY’S THOUGHT
David knew what it was like to be tormented. He knew the pain that comes with great need. He experienced difficulties that had no escape, except by the mercy of an Almighty God. So David came to God and he cried out for mercy and help. That was the beginning of today’s passage. Verses later David is praising God. God had heard his cry. As David faced his situation, we see that God became his strength and protection. David trusted God with all his heart. The result was a deep spiritual joy. God did not take David out of his situation. David still faced his problems, but instead of doing it on his own, God provided David with strength. God protected David like a shield. Do you have a story similar to David? Are there times when you need to cry out to God for His mercy? Rest assured He hears you. You too can end up praising God for He promises that He will be your strength. He will be your shield. You can trust Him with your situation. When you do, you too will experience the deep joy that can only come from Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You today asking for Your mercy in my life. I thank You for hearing my cry and offering to be my strength and shield. I accept this promise and put my all my trust in You. Thank You that I will not be disappointed. Fill my heart with a deep joy today so that I too will burst out with thanksgiving. In Jesus name I pray.
AMEN

Wisdom

TODAY’S VERSE
“I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.”
Ephesians 1:16-17 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Spiritual wisdom and insight. It is perhaps the most important trait we could ask God for. It was so important that Paul prayed constantly that God would give it to the church. When God asked Solomon to ask for anything he wanted, Solomon asked for wisdom in order to rule the people. God was happy with this decision and gave Solomon “a wise and understanding heart.” We need no less. Everyday we face circumstances and make decisions. How often have we relied on our own understanding instead of seeking God and the wisdom that He has? James tells us that if we are lacking wisdom all we need to do is ask God. David tells us not to lean on our own understanding but seek God and He will direct us. Today, ask God for wisdom. Ask Him for insight and understanding. Seek Him, talk to Him, listen to Him and He will give you all the wisdom you need.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You asking for Your wisdom and insight. Guide me, direct me, give me all the wisdom I need to make it through this day. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Bring It To God

TODAY’S VERSE
“After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the LORD’s Temple and spread it out before the LORD.  And Hezekiah prayed.”
II Kings 19:14-15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When you get bad news, what do you do? King Hezekiah was the King of Judah. The King of Assyria was mounting a campaign against the Jews and God told Hezekiah not to worry, that He would take care of the nation. But with the same ploy that Satan used against Adam and Eve, the King of Assyria’s messenger told King Hezekiah, “Don’t let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you.” Satan’s strategy is to get us to doubt God. God loves you, don’t believe it. God will provide your needs, don’t believe it. God cares, don’t believe it. But I love Hezekiah’s response. After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, “he went up to the LORD’s Temple and spread it out before the LORD and prayed.” There is no better plan. There is nothing I could ever say that would be better than to take all your burdens, take all your cares, take all of your worries and spread them out before God. Today, find a quiet place and meet with Him. Lay everything out before Him and pray. Talk to Him. Share your pain with Him. Listen to Him; let Him share with you His love and the truth about your situation. Take comfort in this, you are not deceived, you can trust God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You with all my worries and cares. I lay them before You. I trust You, dear Lord. Comfort me. Guide me. Protect me, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Our Chief Purpose

TODAY’S VERSE
“Honor the LORD for his glory and strength. Honor the LORD for the glory of his name. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.”
Psalms 29:1-2

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What do you think is the most significant purpose God has for us on this earth? You could certainly build a case for loving others. The Apostle John told us that God is love, so loving others is most certainly on God’s agenda. Evangelism must be a priority. Jesus left us with the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations. Personal worship is another purpose God has created us for. God longs for our adoration. He is worthy of all our praise and worship. What a privilege it is to bow down before the Almighty creator of the Universe and know that He cares deeply for our worship. David said to “Honor the Lord” and “To worship Him in the splendor of His holiness.” It is nearly impossible to fathom what it is like to be before God in all His splendor and majesty, but that is what we are invited to do. Take the mountain tops, the streams, sunsets, ocean views, canyons and any other majestic visuals images that you have been privileged to see and let it equal one drop of water. Now put that drop in the ocean and you will begin to see how our paltry earthly images compare to His splendor. So today, no matter where you are, stop and participate in one of the most sacred and special purposes of our human experience. Right this moment, praise Him for who He is. Thank Him for all He has done. Worship Him in all His glory. He has invited you to come and adore Him. Don’t take His invitation for granted. It is a rare gift from God Himself. Worship Him with all your heart, soul and mind.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come right now to worship You. Thank You for Your love for me. I bow before You this moment and adore You for all Your goodness. You are the true and living Almighty God and I praise You for all You have done for me. Thank You for making me Your Child through the death of Your Son, Jesus, on the cross for me. I love and worship You in Jesus Name.
AMEN

But God

TODAY’S VERSE
“We faced conflict from every direction, with battles on the outside and fear on the inside. But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us.”
II Corinthians 7:5-6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Two words. Two words that can turn everything around. Two words that make all the difference in the world. Two words, that are available to us at any time. Paul is beside himself so he writes, “We faced conflict from every direction, with battles on the outside and fear on the inside.” He paints a bleak picture, with seemingly no hope, and then he writes two words, “but God.” All would have been lost, “but God”. There would have been no hope, “but God”. There is nothing that could be done, “but God”. It was God. The God who encourages those who are discouraged, that encouraged him. And He will do the same for us. Today, let God be the difference. Let God give you all the encouragement you need. Let God be God in your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, you know all about me. You are the one that makes all the difference in my life. Thank You for being the God of all encouragement. Encourage my heart today.
AMEN

More Than Conquerors

TODAY’S VERSE
“In all things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us”
Romans 8:37 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Life can get hard. There are so many days that I wake up and I can hardly conquer brushing my teeth, let alone all the battles I have lined up for the day. How can I possibly win the difficulties I am facing? And yet Paul writes, “Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?” Paul answers, “No despite all these things”; despite all these struggles and difficulties, what? Despite all that life can dish out, “in all things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” But this isn’t simply getting a victory in a negative circumstance. No, Paul says that we are more than a conqueror. It is more than coming out on top of a difficulty. It is living with the realization that we are His child no matter what our circumstances. We are more than a conqueror, we are His ambassador.  We have been chosen by God to live for Him and are part of His family. Today, when problems come up, when it seems that everything is going wrong, remember that Christ has given you everything you need to be a conqueror. But more than a conqueror, He has called you to be His beloved child, an heir with Christ, set free with His blood and given power by His resurrection.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for making me more than a conqueror over all the difficulties I go through. Thank You for loving me and giving me everything I need to live for You. Help me believe this Father and live in it’s reality today.
AMEN

Your Deepest Cares

TODAY’S VERSE
“Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.”
I Peter 5:7 (AMP)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Why is it we feel we need to minimize our pain? Where did we get the idea that we would become a burden to God? How did we come to believe that it is unspiritual to admit that we have been a victim of something awful? Abuse, violence, the death of a loved one, divorce, a bad accident, incarceration, war. God cares when we have suffered as the result of something being done to us. And God cares when we have suffered from trauma as the result of something not happening. When love, safety and security from those we trust is missing, we get trauma in the form of abandonment, unfaithfulness, embezzlement, betrayal, gossip or neglect. And to pretend that we are not affected and everything is fine is to only add to the already damage left in trauma’s wake. It is not spiritual to “tough it out.” It is spiritual to be healed. Peter is pleading with us to cast all of our cares onto Jesus. His whole book speaks about the suffering of Jesus and how He understands our suffering. And here Peter assures us that Jesus “cares for you.” He cares for you with deep affection. Today, bring your pain to Jesus. Tell Him about your trauma. Ask Him to give you strength, forgiveness, peace and a deep understanding of love. Ask Him to heal your broken heart; heal your deep wounds of grief and anger. Bring the whole of your cares. Cast them on Him and leave them there.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You. I come to You with all my burden, all my cares. You know my pain. You know my suffering. I bring it all to You. Heal my hurts. Heal my heart. Return me to joy, I pray.
AMEN

Joy

TODAY’S VERSE
“Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.”
Psalms 34:5 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is an epidemic of shame. Why is it that we who have been called by Christ, we who have had our sins forgiven, we who have been lavished with the love of God Himself, still struggle with shame? What happened? Who lied to us? What has led to this pervasive feeling of worthlessness? Guilt I understand. I have sinned and in need of forgiveness. But how do we find forgiveness for shame? How do we correct that insidious feeling of something so utterly broken? Shame, it is a lie from Hell itself. It takes what God has created and defames it. But today it can stop! Today we can choose joy. Today we can look into the face of our loving Savior and believe what He believes about us. We can replace the lie of shame with the truth of His love. We are His beloved. We are His joy. We are His creation and He looks at us with love. Today, let the truth change you. Stop. Don’t go any farther until you believe. Look at Him. Gaze upon God and His love for you until your face becomes radiant with joy. So radiant that no shadow of shame dares to ever darken your face again. May it be so.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father. I need Your grace. I need the transforming power of Your love to fill me. Help me gaze upon Your face and see Your love for me. I surrender my feelings of shame and ask You to replace them with joy.
AMEN
