His Abiding Peace

TODAY’S VERSE
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What do we have to do to experience the peace that Paul is writing about? Do we have to strive for it? Is it something we have to earn? Is there a special prayer we need to recite? No, it is nothing we do, it is something we accept. Paul shares the secret. He shares that we need to present every situation to God and then rest in Him. He tells us not to be anxious about anything but to give everything to God in prayer. It is coming into His presence in prayer that we find our peace. It is focusing our attention on His almighty power, His extravagant love, and His particular awareness of our situation that we are suddenly ushered into a consciousness of His peace. This is our home. His peace transcends any circumstance. This is where we belong, but somehow we slip out of this awareness. We are like a bird that is flying, constantly looking for the sky. All we need to do is open our eyes. We are loved by God, He is constantly aware of us, and His peace transcends all our circumstances. Today, let us open our eyes and become deeply aware of His peace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your abiding presence. Thank You for Your constant love for me. Help me today be fully aware of all that You are. Help me experience the peace that You have for me.
AMEN

Be Strong and Courageous

TODAY’S VERSE
“Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Josh 1:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We can let fear dominate our life or we can choose to be strong and courageous. I say we can “choose” but have you noticed in today’s verse it is a command? Why would God do that? Why would He command us to be strong and courageous? Because we NEED it and He is WORTHY of it! However, we do have options. We can let fear grip our heart and influence our decisions. We can rationalize why we can’t be strong or courageous. We can justify why we should be discouraged and drown in self-pity and yet what does God command? “Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Today, decide to obey the Lord. Be strong and courageous in all you face today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I am faced with so many opportunities for fear and discouragement and yet You have commanded me to be strong and courageous. Help me, Lord, obey You. Thank You that You promised to be with me wherever I go.
AMEM

Renew Me

TODAY’S VERSE
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. – Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
II Corinthians 4:8,9,16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What are you going to do today? What’s on your list? It is hard to get everything done when we are stressed and under the gun. But what about those things that never made your list? How will they ever have a chance? Paul knew what it was like to have struggles. He had a lot to do. A lot of churches looked to him for leadership. He was concerned about all the new converts and whether they were getting the right teachings. On top of all that, Paul had much contention and hardships as he ministered. He said that he was, hard pressed, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down. It would have been horrible to work under these conditions except for one thing. And Paul had it on his list of things to do. He took the time to be inwardly renewed every day! Look at what he wrote, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” Paul took the time to get to know God. He allowed the Holy Spirit to minister to him. He came to God and did not leave until the work of renewing was done. It was on the top of his list of things to do. Is it on yours? Today, find some time to let God minister to you. Be purposeful and deliberate in getting to know God and He will renew you day by day.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Holy Spirit, I come to You today and ask You to renew me. Renew my thoughts, renew my attitudes, renew my passion. Fill me, guide me, direct my path. Renew me today I pray.
AMEN

Understanding His Power

TODAY’S VERSE
“I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him.”
Ephesians 1:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Why would Paul pray such a prayer? How can we ever comprehend God’s power? The answer would be, “A little at a time.” Understanding something so vast as God’s unlimited power is a process. Even if we had a deep revelation of His almighty power, there would be so much more to know. It would be like being on the edge of our universe only to see another universe beyond. But Paul knew that God wants to reveal Himself and His power to us so He prays that God would open our understanding to the power made available for our life. What kind of power is he writing about? Paul continues today’s verse by saying, “This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.” God wants you and I to share in the same power that raised Jesus from the dead! The same power that gives life is available as a resource in our life. And why does Jesus have that power? Paul answers that question by saying that Jesus is “far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.” So today ask God to give you understanding of His incredible power, then put that understanding to use in your faith and in your prayers. Ask God to help you trust Him and the power He has available for this day.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You are all powerful. You are almighty. Help me today to begin to really understand all the power You have made available for my life. Help me trust Your love and Your power as I pray and step out in faith, trusting You for great things.
AMEN

Trust God

TODAY’S VERSE
“Make the LORD of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life. He is the one you should fear. He is the one who should make you tremble. He will keep you safe.”
Isaiah 8:13-14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Can it get any clearer than this? Isaiah calls God the “Lord of Heaven’s Armies.” What would be more comforting if we are afraid? This is a clarion call, “We are to trust God with everything we have. He is the only one that deserves our fear.” The God who has all the awesome power to make us tremble with fear, is the one we can trust. Why? Because we are not the object of His wrath, we are the object of His love. He will keep us safe.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come humbly to You because I deeply respect You and Your mighty power. And yet You have called me to be the object of Your love. Help me today to completely trust You with everything I have and in everything I do. Because of Jesus.
AMEN

Be Not Afraid

TODAY’S VERSE
“Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.”
Psalms 27:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes the best way to overcome something is to replace it with the opposite. David decided to do this with fear. When he was surrounded by a mighty invading army he had a choice to make. He could go with the normal response of fear or he could replace fear with the opposite. He could fill his heart with confidence in God. It was this love that he had for God and the love he knew God had for him that allowed him to exercise confidence. He was trusted in God’s love. The Bible says, “perfect love casts out fear.” Add to perfect love an all powerful God and you have a real confidence maker. Today, when stress comes into your life, when you are tempted to become overwhelmed, put your trust in God. Step out in faith and let confidence in Him take over.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank You Father, that You are trustworthy. You are all powerful and all loving. I come to you today and lay my fears at Your feet. Give me the confidence to completely trust in You.
AMEN

Overcoming Fear

TODAY’S VERSE
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
II Timothy 1:7 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
We often think of fear as the reaction to scary events, like the screams in a horror movie. But some of our most fearful behavior is often hid from us. Many people who are living daily in fear aren’t even aware of it. In “Surrender To Love” Dr. Benner writes, “One of the things that block us from gaining freedom from fear is that most fearful people don’t think of themselves as afraid. Unless their fears are focused on something external (such as snakes, heights or crowds), most people in bondage to fear fail to recognize the true nature of their inner distress. – Although the object of one’s fears may seem to be external, the real source of the fear is internal. The danger is within. The enemy is one’s own self, or at least some aspect of their self.” This is what Paul was trying to get across. We are so focused on our behavior we don’t see the motivation behind it. Paul called it a “spirit of fear”. It is this internal pervasive fear that controls what we do. It is spiritual and emotional. Satan is a liar and accuser so he fills our head with fear. Our own experience and belief systems do the rest. If we take most of the fear we have, we will see that it is a fear of what others will think or do. But today’s passage says that we do not have to live in that kind of fear. Why? Because God has given us something else. He has given us power, love and a sound mind. What an alternative to anything we would fear. Anything we fear can be defeated either by God’s power, love or the sound mind He has given us. So today, when you are tempted to act out of fear, remember, there are other options. Give the power, love or a sound mind that God has given you a chance.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for not giving me a spirit of fear. Today, I want to live in Your power and love and the sound mind that You have given me.
AMEN

God Is My Strength

TODAY’S VERSE
“The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.”
Psalms 28:7 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
You will not get anywhere in your spiritual life until you really believe in God’s intentions. God specifically created you because He wants your fellowship. He wants your love. He desires for you to spend time in prayer with Him. He loves it when you look to Him as your strength. That is what David did. David said that his heart trusted in God and when he did God helped. God wants to be your strength in relationships, in heartaches, in struggles, in conflict, in crisis, in the everyday grind of work, in difficulties, in temptations, in all that would weigh you down. God’s power is not the issue here. It is your faith, your willingness, your humility. Today, when you find yourself in need, why not turn to God for His strength. He will help. Then you too will find your heart leaping for joy as you give thanks to God for being your strength.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your strength. Forgive me when I try to do things on my own. Help me to be conscious of Your presence so I will turn to You in my time of need. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

God’s Faithfulness

TODAY’S VERSE
“The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
I Samuel17:37 (NIV)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
If we would remember all the times that God delivered us from trouble we would enjoy a much more peaceful life. So many times I start my day as if it was the only day I have ever lived. Now I don’t mind forgetting some of the bad things in my life but when I begin to live as if God were not alive then I need to do some memory exercises. God has created us with a powerful memory so we could grow mentally, socially and spiritually. Throughout the Bible we are admonished to “remember” the goodness of God. Hope, peace, faith all come out of a memory of God’s faithfulness in the pass. David was going to fight Goliath and all he took with him was a sling, five smooth stones and a memory of God’s deliverance. Listen to what he said when he went to face the giant. “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” What are you facing? What giant is between you and victory? Remember God’s faithfulness in the past and trust Him with today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, than You for Your faithfulness in my life. Help me remember all the good things you have done and how you have acted on my behalf. Then when trial and struggles come, help me step out in faith knowing that you are the same today that You were yesterday.
AMEN

How Should We Live?

TODAY’S VERSE
“We live in such a way that no one will stumble because of us, and no one will find fault with our ministry. – We prove ourselves by our purity, our understanding, our patience, our kindness, by the Holy Spirit within us, and by our sincere love.”
II Corinthians 6:3, 6 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Christ has commanded us to be His servants in this world. We are representing Him. When people see us they should see Him. Paul knew this. In today’s passage we see that Paul was trying to live in such a way that nobody would be able to discredit the Lord because of his ministry. But how did he do this? He did it by the way he lived. He was able to overcome allegations by his pure lifestyle. He did not participate in the worldly practices that those around him did. This allowed him to have moral authority. His understanding of God, the scriptures, his ministry and the culture also allowed him to be above reproach. Paul was also patient in his suffering. He trusted God and it showed others that they too could trust their heavenly Father. This was perhaps one of his biggest weapon in the fight against being discredited. Paul was kind and this kindness went far in given him favor with the people. Paul’s kindness caused many to consider believing in the God he believed in. Paul also believed deeply in the Holy Spirit and allowed Him to move in the hearts of those that would oppose Him. It was the Holy Spirit that filled Paul with love, joy, peace, patience and all the other attributes that he needed to be effective in his testimony of Christ’s love. Finally it was Paul’s sincere love that enabled him to live among so many different people groups and win people to Christ. Love was the international language that cut through cultural barriers and allowed people to hear Christ’s message of salvation. Today, let us go into the world that God has called us to minister in. Let’s live the same way Paul did and help others to come to a saving knowledge of Christ.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me live like Paul. Help me live in a way that those around me every day would see something in me that would lead them to You.
AMEN
