Really Knowing

TODAY’S VERSE
“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,”
Ephesians 1:17-18 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God want us to know Him. And He has created us with a great capacity for knowledge. As we grow in Him our knowledge also grows. Paul expresses this in today’s verses. He uses three different words for knowing or knowledge. First he asks God to give us the Spirit of wisdom and revelation. This is where we start to learn and acquire knowledge about God and gain insight and understanding. But God doesn’t want us to stop there. Paul also says that we should gain this wisdom so we can “know” Christ better. This is a more personal intimate knowledge. This is experiential knowledge. How we need to move from our head to our heart and get to know our savior in a more personal way. Paul finishes by praying that more than knowledge; that the eyes of our heart would be enlightened so we would “know” the hope to which He has called us. This is our deepest felt knowledge. It is akin to the Biblical phrase, “being fully persuaded.” It is an assurance. The way they expressed it in the original language is, “I know that I know, that I know!” Oh that we would grow to this level of assurance. That our experience with God would result is such a way that we can say about God and His love for us, and all the promises that He has made; that we are confident in Him, that we are full of assurance, that there is no doubt, that we are fully persuaded, that we know that we know, that we know.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me know You. Help me grow in my knowledge and in my experience with You. Open the eyes of my heart so I can say with confidence that I know that I know, that I know all about You.
AMEN

Understanding His Power

TODAY’S VERSE
“I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him.”
Ephesians 1:19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Why would Paul pray such a prayer? How can we ever comprehend God’s power? The answer would be, “A little at a time.” Understanding something so vast as God’s unlimited power is a process. Even if we had a deep revelation of His almighty power, there would be so much more to know. It would be like being on the edge of our universe only to see another universe beyond. But Paul knew that God wants to reveal Himself and His power to us so He prays that God would open our understanding to the power made available for our life. What kind of power is he writing about? Paul continues today’s verse by saying, “This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms.” God wants you and I to share in the same power that raised Jesus from the dead! The same power that gives life is available as a resource in our life. And why does Jesus have that power? Paul answers that question by saying that Jesus is “far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come.” So today ask God to give you understanding of His incredible power, then put that understanding to use in your faith and in your prayers. Ask God to help you trust Him and the power He has available for this day.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You are all powerful. You are almighty. Help me today to begin to really understand all the power You have made available for my life. Help me trust Your love and Your power as I pray and step out in faith, trusting You for great things.
AMEN

Trust God

TODAY’S VERSE
“Make the LORD of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life. He is the one you should fear. He is the one who should make you tremble. He will keep you safe.”
Isaiah 8:13-14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Can it get any clearer than this? Isaiah calls God the “Lord of Heaven’s Armies.” What would be more comforting if we are afraid? This is a clarion call, “We are to trust God with everything we have. He is the only one that deserves our fear.” The God who has all the awesome power to make us tremble with fear, is the one we can trust. Why? Because we are not the object of His wrath, we are the object of His love. He will keep us safe.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come humbly to You because I deeply respect You and Your mighty power. And yet You have called me to be the object of Your love. Help me today to completely trust You with everything I have and in everything I do. Because of Jesus.
AMEN

Trusting In His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“But I am trusting you, O LORD, saying, “You are my God!” – In your unfailing love, rescue me.”
Psalms 31:14, 16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Accepting salvation is an act of faith. It is the result of God’s love for mankind. We accept His sacrifice for us but that doesn’t mean we really have accepted His love. It is possible to cry out to God for mercy and never experience deep in your heart that you are loved. We believe He loves us, we just can’t grasp it. It is a low feeling of self worth that cannot sense the deep love that Christ has for us.  In the book “True Faced” the authors write, “When we on the basis of trust receive God’s perfect love for us, it pushes away our fear and teaches us to embrace the love that heals our wounds. – Trusting God frees our hearts to experience his safe, constant, intimate sufficiency. – When we receive love, when we are loved, we feel fulfilled. Love completely satisfies our longings, ambitions, and potential. God, the ultimate fulfiller, invites us to trust Him.” Today trust God when He says He loves you and let His unconditional love sink deep into your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for Your salvation. Help me trust You and accept deep in my heart the true love You have for me.
AMEN

Take Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
“I will boast only in the LORD; let all who are helpless take heart.”
Psalms 34:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We all have choices to make. We have all had times when we have come up against seemingly helpless situations. It is what we do with that helplessness that counts. Dr. Martin Seligman coined the phrase “Learned helplessness” when he was referring to one of the major reasons for depression. He said that when we get discouraged over and over again, we start to “learn” to be helpless. We give up hope. David gives us another choice. He said that all those who are helpless should “take heart”. He meant to take pause and check deep within yourself and find hope. Find that faith in God and muster up the courage to believe that God cares and will see you through. Interestingly enough, later in his life Seligman did more research and coined the phrase, “Learned optimism.” He concluded that if we can learn to be helpless, we can learn to be optimistic. Perhaps he read the Psalms. The truth is we have a choice. Today, when things seem to be overwhelming, if you find yourself getting discouraged, take heart, trust in God and have faith. He will see you through.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me today to trust You. Help me overcome any discouragement by taking heart and putting my hope in You.
AMEN

His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“May you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ.
Ephesians 3:18-19 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is one thing to know about the love of Christ, it is another thing to experience it. Paul says that God’s love is wide, long, high and deep and that would take God’s own power to understand its vastness. We cannot even begin to understand God’s love by ourself. But experience it? That is Paul’s prayer, that we would experience the love of Christ. In the book, “True Faced” the authors write that we are ready to experience God’s love, “when we have the desire to be loved by Him”. And one of the best ways to find that desire is to admit to God that we have needs. When we admit we have needs, it gives us the opportunity to trust God with them, letting God love us, on His terms not ours. It is coming to God with this openness, trust and faith that allows His power to help us understand and experience the greatness of His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You admitting that I have great needs. I need Your love, I need Your power, I need Your Holy Spirit, I need Your direction. Father, I am so needy, but today I ask You to meet my needs on Your terms not mine. I desire to be loved by You dear Father and choose to trust that You will help me understand Your love in deep and meaningful ways.
AMEN

Friendship

TODAY’S VERSE
“There are “friends” who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother.”
Proverbs 18:24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The more I study the scriptures, the more I study human behavior, the more I am convinced that we need healthy relationships. Our brains, our capacity for joy, our spirituality all function best when we are in healthy authentic relationships with God and others. Have you ever noticed the difference you experience when some one graces you with a social smile compared to someone who looks you in the eyes and communicates a real empathy? Friendship is real. With friendship, we can be real. Jesus said to His disciples, “I have called you friends.” He wants to be the same with you! Today, focus on being a friend with God and others. Be real, be authentic, build trust and empathy. True joy comes with relationships.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me to build true friendships with You and others. Give me the love, courage and strength to do this, I pray.
AMEN

Unbelief

TODAY’S VERSE
“And they were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them, ‘A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his own family.’ And so he did only a few miracles there because of their unbelief.”
Matthew 13:57-58 (NLT)

TODAY’S MESSAGE
There is doubt, then there is unbelief. Doubt comes from many different places. It could be feeling of not being loved that would cause a person to doubt whether God would love them or not. An unanswered prayer could cause someone to doubt the next time they go to pray for God’s intervention. There are many variables that can cause us to doubt God’s ability or desire to work on our behalf. This is where faith and hope come in. Then there is unbelief. Most of the time unbelief comes from our presuppositions, traditions or allegiance to an ideology or group. The Pharisees had their own beliefs and nothing could cause then to reconsider Jesus. So did those in Jesus’ own home town. He came back home and all the talk of Jesus being the Messiah was too much for them to bare. You see they had their religious and political vision of who the Messiah would be and it certainly wasn’t the Jewish boy who grew up down the street. Matthew says they were “deeply offended and refused to believe in Him.” The result was tragic. They missed the biggest blessing of their life. Jesus had transformed towns and villages all throughout the region by teaching and healing. His own home town could have used His touch, but instead they had beliefs that got in the way. Today, ask yourself, “What keeps me from trusting in Jesus?” If it is doubt, talk to God about it. Ask Him for the faith and hope that you need. If however, it is hardcore unbelief, ask God to expose traditions and false doctrines that get in your way of believing in Him. Bring them to Christ and trade them in for faith.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I believe, but help my unbelief. Help me let go of anything that stands in the way of my faith in You. Help me grow in my understanding and trust in You more and more.
AMEN

Be Not Afraid

TODAY’S VERSE
“Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.”
Psalms 27:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes the best way to overcome something is to replace it with the opposite. David decided to do this with fear. When he was surrounded by a mighty invading army he had a choice to make. He could go with the normal response of fear or he could replace fear with the opposite. He could fill his heart with confidence in God. It was this love that he had for God and the love he knew God had for him that allowed him to exercise confidence. He was trusted in God’s love. The Bible says, “perfect love casts out fear.” Add to perfect love an all powerful God and you have a real confidence maker. Today, when stress comes into your life, when you are tempted to become overwhelmed, put your trust in God. Step out in faith and let confidence in Him take over.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank You Father, that You are trustworthy. You are all powerful and all loving. I come to you today and lay my fears at Your feet. Give me the confidence to completely trust in You.
AMEN

Trust In The Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
In our western society we are always seeking to understand. Reason, logic and the scientific method rule our universities. There is nothing wrong with trying to understand, but some situations take more. They are beyond our human reasoning. Our logic can be faulty, our thinking clouded with personal agenda and false assumptions. In this world we must include the spiritual. We are human and were created to be in fellowship with God. He has intended that we seek Him for wisdom and understanding. We use faith to seek the will of our loving and tender God. In today’s passage Solomon is encouraging us to trust in God with our heart. When our mind cannot understand, we allow our heart to reach out to God. We don’t depend on our own attempt at understanding. And as we seek His will in all we do, God promises that He will show us what path to take. There is wisdom with Him. Today, as you go through your day, trust in God. Submit to Him and let Him guide you. He will direct your path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, today I choose to trust You. I seek to do Your will, knowing that as I do, You will direct my path.
AMEN
