Search My Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
Psalms 139:23-24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The Bible says that David “was a man after God’s heart.” What a tribute. Contrary to what we might think, this was not because David was perfect. He knew how easy he could fall into sin. He remembered how God had to wake him up from an immoral stupor through the rebuke of Nathan the Prophet. If anyone could have created the slogan “No perfect people allowed,” it was David. David had to give up the “perception of perfection” in order to renew a close relationship with God. When God convicted David of wrong doing, David repented, asking God to have mercy on him. In order to stay in a close relationship with God, David decided to allow God to speak to him about his behavior. He prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” How about you? Do you feel far from God? Who moved? What is stopping you from coming back? Is it pride? Is it anger? Is it the false notion that you don’t need to? Let us join David in becoming a man after God’s heart, not through the false ambition of perfection, but through the daily, honest and open relationship with God that allows Him to search us, point out what we are doing wrong and then lead us along the path of following Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to you today and pray what David prayed so long ago, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
AMEN

Peace, Love and Grace

TODAY’S VERSE
Peace be with you, dear brothers and sisters, and may God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you love with faithfulness. May God’s grace be eternally upon all who love our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 6:23-24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul knew how to end a letter. I can imagine him thinking, “What three things would my dear brothers and sisters in Christ need the most in the world? What would help them with any situation? What would give them the strength to carry on? What would be worth dying for? What would make life worth living?” This was more than the granting of three wishes. Paul prayed with the full knowledge that what he prayed could be our reality. He prayed that God would give you peace. He prayed that the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ would give you love. And finally, that God’s own grace would be on you for all eternity. Peace, love and grace. What could you do with that today? How much would you keep for yourself? How much would you give away? And what do you do when someone offers you a gift? You take it. So today, might you take and be conscious of all the peace, love and grace God has for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your peace, love and grace that You have for me. I pray that today I might really begin to experience the effects of Your peace, love and grace in all that I do. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

True Significance

TODAY’S VERSE
“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!”
Psalms 139:17-18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Significance. How do you find it? The story goes that a man travels all around the world looking for treasure and at the end of his life comes back to his home village to die. After he dies, the next person buys his house and finds diamonds in the back yard. He had a diamond mine in his back yard all the time. We look all around our own world to find love, acceptance and significance. The truth is right in front of us. We are significant because God created us and loves us, period. David really believed that God thought about him. You can, too. How? By believing today’s passage with your heart, not just your mind.  Read the words again and this time picture God feeling this way about you. “How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You have created all things, and yet, out of all that You have created from before time, You think about me. More than that, You love me. I am significant to You. Thank You Lord! Help these thoughts fill my heart and shape my behavior today so I might return to You all my love and adoration. I praise You! In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Encouragement

TODAY’S VERSE
“But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”
Hebrews 3:13 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God made us for fellowship. It is wired into our brain. We need God and other people. Relationships play a pivotal role in our Christianity. We must attune ourselves to God and to each other. If we don’t, then we isolate. And when we isolate, we start to ruminate on our inner thoughts with no checks or balance. What starts out as a hurt can fester into a deep wound if there is no one there to encourage us. Anger becomes revenge, sadness becomes despair, temptation become sins, all because we had no one to listen, to correct, to pray for us. Fellowship with our Lord and each other is crucial to our everyday life and it begins with us. We must choose not to isolate. We must choose to be someone else’s encourager. Today, find someone to encourage you and then go and encourage others.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess I have fallen to the deceitfulness of sin because I have forsaken the encouragement of others. Help me not to isolate. Help me truly fellowship with other believers so I can be encouraged and then, help me encourage others.
AMEN

Does It Get Any Better Than This?

TODAY’S VERSE

“Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.”
Psalms 143:8,10

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is something about an isolated sandy beach along the ocean. Sitting on the sand listening to the ocean waves hit the shore. Sun caressing your face. A gentle breeze awakening your skin. Birds chirping in the background. Does it get any better than this?  Well, yes! David talks about a place that is much more satisfying. A place where the warmth of the sun pales in comparison. Where the sound of the ocean is replaced with the whisper of God. Where the gentle breeze is overshadowed by the mighty wind of the Holy Spirit. This place David is talking about is the very presence of God. He is sharing about his time with God in the morning. “Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning” he writes. He shares about hearing God’s voice, sensing His love, learning His will, trusting His word and being led in which way to go. It really doesn’t get any better than this! This can be your experience today. You don’t need to drive anywhere, apply any sunscreen or walk barefoot on a hot sandy beach. You just need to be available. Call on God even now. Pray David’s prayer and might you come back to this peaceful place again and again.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, “let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.” In Jesus’ name. AMEN

God’s Plans For You

TODAY’S VERSE
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 29:11-13

“Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.”
Hebrews 11:1
TODAY’S THOUGHT
Faith is such an important part of our spiritual walk. But faith in what? The author of Hebrews says that faith is “the confidence that what we HOPE for will happen.” What do you hope for? Jeremiah shares three great truths that you can put your faith in. The first truth is that God has plans for you, plans to give you hope and a future. What a promise. Have you claimed it? The second truth Jeremiah shares is that when you call upon God and pray, God will listen! What a truth, what a precious reality! God listens to you when you pray. The last truth is this: when you seek God with all your heart, He will be found! There are many goals and aspirations that you have had in life that for one reason or another, ended up being an elusive dream. But not with God. When you seek God with all your heart, He promises that you will find Him. Today stop and consider that God has plans for your life. His plans are to give you hope and a future.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I have come today seeking You with all my heart and know that You are listening to me. I am so glad that I have found You, the true and living God. I claim today the fact that You have plans for me. Plans with  hope and a future.  Thank You, dear Father, that I can put my full confidence in that promise. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Joy Is A Choice

TODAY’S VERSE
“Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!”
Philippians 4:4 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I remember years ago reading a book that deeply touched me. It was called Happiness is a Choice! Often we are tempted to think that joy is the result of our circumstances. However, the premise of Happiness Is A Choice is that we don’t have to be subject to all the variables around us. We can choose to be happy. We can choose joy. Webster defines joy as “the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.” As a Christian, we can agree with the first part. Our joy does come from a deep sense of well being. However, unlike the rest of the definition, our joy is not dependent on success, good fortune or prospect of possessions. Rather, our joy is an emotion that is evoked by a faith in a God that loves us. Nehemiah tells us that joy that comes from God is a great source of strength. Paul takes our joy to a new level and says, “no matter what happens, we should be joyful.” In fact, he says we should “Always be full of joy in the Lord.” He meant it so much that he repeated it for emphasis when he wrote, “I say it again – rejoice.” What are you facing today? What circumstances do you find yourself in? It doesn’t matter; you can choose joy! If you are struggling and not sure how you can be joyful, ask God to supernaturally open your eyes to who He is and to give you a joyful heart. He will.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, today I choose joy. Fill me from the top of my head to the depth of my soul with joy. Help me rejoice today in my well being in You. Help me rejoice today, dear God, in who You are, and that I am Your child. Help me rejoice that all my sins are forgiven, that You know me personally and love me unconditionally. This is a fantastic reality and today, Lord, I choose joy! In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

The Love Of God

TODAY’S VERSE
“You love them as much as you love me.”
John 17:23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Jesus is praying to His Father. And He shares something simply astounding about you and I. He said. “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you.” He continues by saying, “May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.” I know I should probably write about the unity that Jesus wants us to live in. He makes it really clear that people will judge Him by the way we live with each other. But I just can’t get past the phrase, “You love them as much as you love me.” Jesus said this! I have a hard time grasping all the meaning of the Trinity, but I do know that God the Father has an unbelievable, almighty, everlasting, incredible love for God the Son. And Jesus said that this same love is what the Godhead has for you and I. I pray that today God will grant us the grace to really fathom what that means. Might knowing that He loves us that much fill our day with peace and joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, thank You for Your infinite, inconceivable love for me. Help me today to live in its awareness and rejoice in its meaning.
AMEN

The Real Deal

TODAY’S VERSE
“My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.”
Job 42:5

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is so easy to walk in our Christian experience and really believe that we know God. We are like a baseball fanatic. You know the kind. He can tell you everything about a certain player. He can quote their batting average, number of homers, lifetime RBI’s. He knows where they played college ball, the names of his wife and children. He even has an autographed baseball. Yet, he has never met the player. Never went to his house, never sat with him at dinner or even had a discussion. Everything he knows is from reading or listening to commentators. Now don’t get me wrong, there is passion! Chances are he will fight you if you say something derogatory about the player. There is passion but it is based on admiration not friendship. Job came to a place where everything he thought he knew about God seemed empty and vain. And then He met God. Job knew all about God, He “worshipped” God, He even lived the way he thought God wanted him to; but when he saw God, it all changed. Knowing God in a personal and intimate way changes everything. And the beauty is that God created each of us with the ability to know Him. He has equipped us with the Holy Spirit who is to teach us all things and bring us into intimate fellowship with God. But the choice is yours. You can choose to spend time with God and ask Him to reveal Himself to you or you can continue to “know” about Him. Cry out to God today and ask Him to open your eyes like He did Job’s and you will be able to say, “My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, sometimes I feel so phony inside. I talk about You, I read about You, I pray to You, but I don’t seem to really know You. Today, Lord, help me be conscious of Your presence. Father, speak to me. Help the eyes of my heart to see You. I want to know You in a deep and personal way.  Help me Lord I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

A New Song

TODAY’S VERSE
“He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.”
Psalms 40:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever noticed how many sad songs there are? Songs of despair, betrayal or heartbreak? Songs that reflect the needs of our heart. How many songs have been our anthem? How many nights have we gone to bed with a sad song going through our head? And then there was God. God comes and gives us a new song. A song of deliverance, of hope and of joy. That happened to King David. God had given him a new song, a song of praise. And because of David’s song of testimony, many put their trust in God. God wants to do the same today. He wants to use our lives as a testimony of His love and grace so others will put their trust in Him. What has been your song lately? If it has been out of tune, why not ask God for a new song, a song of deliverance, a song of hope and song of joy and peace? Put your trust in God and He will put a new song in your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Lord, I need a new melody of hope, joy and peace. I ask You to fill my heart with a song of Your love. Then might others hear my praise and put their trust in You.
AMEN
