Word And Power

TODAY’S VERSE
“Jesus replied, ‘Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.’”
Mark 12:24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Some mistakes are more critical than others. This one is huge. And yet how often we fall right into the same trap. There aren’t any two things more relevant to the way we should live than the Scriptures or God’s presence and power and yet how many days do we live without the influence of either? Paul tells us, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” Why would we go a day without this? And God’s power? We can’t even begin to describe it. Jesus was attacking the religious attitudes of the Pharisees. They wanted to argue doctrine and pretend that they were spiritual. God doesn’t see it that way. We need to know His word and power. The author of Hebrews says it this way, “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.” Today may God help us to know His word and power.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for making such a serious mistake of not knowing more about Your word and power. Thank You for giving me everything I need for a Godly life through Your divine power and promises. Help me know these I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

I Want To See

TODAY’S VERSE
“What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked.
‘My rabbi,’ the blind man said, ‘I want to see!’”
Mark 10:51 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
“I want to see.” That may be an obvious answer for a blind person who is asked by Jesus, “What do you want me to do for you?” Sight is a precious gift that we easily take for granted. But as I read this I thought, I too need to ask for sight. Not physical but spiritual. I am so blind to the things of God. The cry of my heart is “I want to see” like the servant of Elisha who was afraid of the enemy armies until Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes and let him see!” The Bible says, “The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.” He saw reality with spiritual eyes. I want to see the way Paul prayed we should see. He wrote, “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” Today when God asks you, “What do you want me to do for you.” Answer, “Help me to see.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me with my spiritual blindness. Open my eyes Lord that I may see what you want me to see.
AMEN

Speak Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
‘“So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.”’
I Samuel 3:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever put yourself in the Samuel’s position? Have you been at a place where you really desire to hear a word from God? God loves you and wants to communicate with you. He speaks through His word, the Bible. He also speaks to your heart through the Holy Spirit. Dallas Willard in his book, Hearing God, concludes, “Direction will always be made available to the mature disciple if without it serious harm would befall people concerned in the matter or the cause of Christ. If I am right, the obedient, listening heart, mature in the things of God, will in such a case find the voice plain and the message clear, as with the experiences of the friends of God recorded in the Bible. This is a claim that must be tested by experience, and anyone willing to meet the conditions and learn from failures as well as successes can put it to the test.” Today, open your heart to hearing from God. Commit yourself to spend time with God in Bible reading, meditation and prayer. Build a deep and trusting relationship with Him and ask Him share His heart with you. Say with Samuel, “’Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” When you come to God in this way, you will hear from Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I give my heart to You and desire to know you better. I desire to hear from You. I long to discern Your direction in my life. I come and say with Samuel, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” AMEN

Wisdom and Understanding

TODAY’S VERSE
“Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. –  For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
Proverbs 2:2-3, 6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a difference wisdom and understanding can make. How many times have we forged on ahead into disaster because we did not seek God for the insight that only He can give. Solomon knew about this more than any man that ever lived. He was asked specifically by God to request anything that he wanted and he asked for wisdom. He knew that with wisdom everything, else in life would come. In today’s passage Solomon shares his secret to life. He writes, “Seek wisdom and understanding”. Specifically, he encourages us to seek God because. “The Lord grants wisdom. From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” And yet it is in our human nature to think that we have all the answers. Why would we ever need to seek God? How foolish. Today, let us be wise, by seeking Him in everything we do. Let’s ask God to grant us wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I pray that You would lead me today. I cannot make it without Your guidance. Give me the wisdom, knowledge and understanding that I so desperately need.
AMEN

Transform Me

TODAY’S VERSE
“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Romans 12:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When we become a Christian, God begins a transformation in our life. His goal is to transform us into all He created us to be. He does this by renewing our mind. This is more than just the way we think, it is also the way we feel. It includes those sensations that send us into mood swings or addictive behavior. God wants to be involved in our emotional pain. He wants to heal our negative memories and restructure our irrational beliefs. But how does He do this? He does this through His Holy Spirit as we study His word, spend time in prayer and fellowship with other believers. It is through this process that we mature into the person He wants us to be. Today, give yourself to God. Submit yourself to the process of change and let Him transform you through the renewing of your mind.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your help in making me into the person You want me to be. I give You my mind, my emotions and my will. Guide me, lead me and transform me I pray.
AMEN

Living For Jesus

TODAY’S VERSE
“The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
II Peter 1:8 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Peter shared how we are to live. He writes, “Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness.” Then he writes that the more we grow in these qualities the more productive and useful we will be in our knowledge of Christ. Have you ever thought of that before? We know that God wants us to serve Him but have you ever considered that He wants you to be productive and useful in your knowledge of Him? He does. God wants you to serve Him and the best way to do that is to know Him better and better. As you do, your personality, behavior and desires will be more like His. His power, knowledge and most of all, His love will be exhibited in your life. Today, choose to know Him more.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me be more productive and useful in my knowledge of You. Help me to supplement my faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness. I ask this in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Grace

TODAY’S VERSE
“This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. – May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.”
II Peter 1:1-2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love Peter’s faith in Christ. He went from a follower of Christ to a slave and apostle. And in his eyes, Jesus went from an itinerant Rabbi to Messiah to his Savior and Lord. What was his secret? How did he grow in his knowledge and experience of Christ? It was God’s grace. The very favor of God was given to him so he could grow in the Lord. The same is given to you. God has poured His knowledge into your mind and heart through the person of the Holy Spirit. Why? Because He has chosen to be gracious toward you. Grace is a gift of God to you. It is His unmerited divine assistance. Today, accept His assistance. Invite God to “give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your grace. I need Your Holy Spirit to help me grow in my knowledge of You. Help me, guide me, instruct me, I pray. May Your grace be alive in my heart.
AMEN

Thinking

TODAY’S VERSE
“Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”
Romans 8:5-6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
“What were you thinking?” Have you ever had anyone ask you that? Usually it’s after something goes wrong. There was a misjudgment and your thinking has been brought into question. Paul is suggesting that we need to be on guard about the way we think. What do we let dominate our mind? Paul suggests it is either the Spirit of God or our sinful nature. What a world of difference the two mindsets have on our life. The mind dominated with the sinful nature leads to sinful thinking and behavior resulting in spiritual death. However, if we let the Spirit of God control our mind, we will find ourself doing things that please the Spirit. This results in life and peace. Today, let your thinking be dominated with the Holy Spirit. Rebuke negative and sinful thinking. Say “No” to temptations and lust that will only lead you down the wrong road. Spend time thinking on God’s word. Pray and converse with God throughout the day. It is your mind; let the Spirit guide your thinking and you will find living for Him is what you were born for.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I want to live my life for You. Let Your Holy Spirit control my thinking. I give You my mind; guide me, direct me, lead me into Your will.
AMEN

God’s Will

TODAY’S VERSE
“May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:10 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The disciples came to Jesus and asked Him to show them how to pray. He then prayed what is now known as the “Lord’s Prayer”. In the prayer He says, “May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”
Notice that He did not say, “God, may my will be done on earth.” So often that is how we pray. We come to God with requests that are more like demands. It is not wrong to ask God for something with confidence. God says that He wants to give us good things. God does answer prayer. Where the problem comes in is when we assume our desire is the will of God. Our confidence should come from knowing God and aligning our desires with His. Not confidence in the fact that we simply want something. In “Desiring God’s Will”, Dr. David Benner writes, “The prayer that comes most naturally for all of us is ‘My name be hallowed, my kingdom come, my will be done.’ This is a prayer of independence and willfulness. It is the liturgy of the kingdom of self. The prayer that goes against our nature and that can become our prayer only through the action of divine grace, is the Lord’s prayer. It inverts everything in the liturgy of the kingdom of the self – ‘Thy name be hallowed, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.’ It is a prayer of surrendered autonomy and willingness. It is the liturgy of the kingdom of God.” Today, attune your heart with God. Pray for wisdom, discernment and align your request with His will. Then we can pray, “May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I ask that You would help me discern Your will for my life. Help me align my joys, desires and will with Yours I pray.
AMEN

Get The Truth

TODAY’S VERSE
“Get the truth and never sell it; also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgment.”
Proverbs 23:23 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
You would think that “truth” would be a priority in our life. But not so. If we would examine our lives, we would be shocked at how many lies we believe. Dr. Chris Thurman in his book “The Lies We Believe” exposes many of the lies that we take for granted. Lies like, “I must have everyone’s love and approval.” “I can’t be happy unless things go my way.” “Life should be easy.” How about this one, “Because I am a Christian, God will protect me from pain and suffering.” There are so many more that we believe. Jesus told us that truth will set us free. Why? Because He knew that lies keep us in bondage.  What can we do? Begin with today’s verse. Get the truth whenever you can. Commit to it. Don’t settle for less. With truth, get wisdom. Lies usually come at the expense of ignorance. Ask God for wisdom and the discipline needed to act on it. Lies usually come because they are easier to live. Not in the long run, but short-term it is often easier to live a lie than the truth. Finally, Solomon suggests we exercise good judgment. Isn’t that the truth? So many times good judgment and discernment will lead us to the right honest choices we need. So today, choose truth. Decide to live by the truth. Ask God for His help, guidance and wisdom and watch the truth set you free.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, it is so easy to believe a lie. Worst to live a lie. I need Your help. I want to live in truth. I want to know the truth. Give me the wisdom, discipline and good judgment I need to know and live the truth today.
AMEN
