Anxiety

TODAY’S VERSE
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
I Peter 5:7 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
So often you hear the admonitions, “Don’t fear.”, “Stop worrying.” or “Quit being afraid.” These are helpful and can often stop us from pursuing a downward spiral of despair. But Peter had a better way. Instead of clipping back the weeds of fear and worry, Peter is recommending that we pull fear out by the roots. He suggests that we pull all our anxiety out by the roots and bring them to Jesus. Not a few or some, all! And why can we do that? Because Jesus cares for us! And how He cares for you! It is like the old hymn says, “Is there a heart o’er bound by sorrow? Is there a life weighed down by care? Come to the cross each burden bearing. All our anxiety leave it there. All your anxiety, all your care, bring to the mercy seat leave it there; never a burden He cannot bear, never a friend like Jesus.” Today, turn to Jesus. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know all about my worry and fear. I come to You now and cast all my anxiety at Your feet. Instead of taking it back, help me take Your love with me instead.
AMEN

Sing

TODAY’S VERSE
“He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.”
Psalms 40:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We can tell people about God or we can tell them about the God that has made a difference in our life! As we come to know Christ the more He will put a song in our heart. A song, like the Psalmist says, that will cause people to see what God has done and amaze them. More that that, they will trust in God for their own needs. This is what happened to the small town where a woman came to a well that Jesus was at. After she met Jesus and He gave her hope, she ran home and told everyone, “Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me.” The Bible records that the many of the people came from the town to meet Jesus. Many trusted in Him as their Savior. People today are dying for lack of a genuine song, a song that will meet the deepest needs of their soul. God has called you and I to sing. When we do, other people just like us, will put their trust in the Lord.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I thank You for the song You have put in my heart. Help me sing! Help me share with others all the wonderful things You have done for me.
AMEN

Joy

TODAY’S VERSE
“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. – I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!”
John 15:9-12 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We were born with joy! So often we think joy is the result of our circumstances. If we behave, if we are lucky, if everything works out right, then there will be joy. But joy goes much deeper than that. Events and circumstances can make us happy or sad, but can they give us true long lasting joy? The kind of joy that isn’t dependent on what we do? No. But Jesus can. Listen to the words that He says to you, “I have loved you like my Father loves me.” And that love was from the time He chose to create you. Unconditional, irrevocable, love from God Himself. Today, let the thought of God’s love poured out for you on the cross of Calvary bring wonder. Let the image of almighty God looking at you with pleasure, love and acceptance warm your heart. Hear the words of Jesus, “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy!” Today, let His joy overflow in your heart.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, overflow my heart with Your joy. The joy that comes from knowing that You love me. From believing that there is nothing I could ever do to earn or lose your love. You love me because You chose to. It is finished and I am left with deep, deep joy.
AMEN

Anger

TODAY’S VERSE
“And ‘don’t sin by letting anger control you.’ Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.”
Ephesians 4:26-27 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
One of the evidences of the fruit of the Spirit in our life is “self-control”. And there is nothing harder to control than our anger. God originally created anger as a defense mechanism to protect us from life threatening danger. Unfortunately, today “danger” has been watered down. Now the majority of what we get angry at is not life threatening at all. Instead we are protecting ourself from embarrassment, inconvenience, consequences or someone stopping us from doing things our own way. We even get mad at God when He dares to go against what seems right in our eyes. Paul warns us about anger. He suggests that we control anger before it controls us. He wrote, “Don’t sin by letting anger control you. Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry.” Today, get a grip on your anger. Make up your mind that anger will not get control of you. Instead, if anything is going to control you, let it be the Holy Spirit.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You that You don’t ask me to do anything that you won’t help me with. I am asking You today to help me with my anger. Holy Spirit, help me control my anger and not give any foothold to Satan.
AMEN

Contentment

TODAY’S VERSE
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”’
Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Some things are better than gold! Who of us hasn’t dreamed of being rich beyond our imagination? It is the dream that is portrayed over and over again on television, in the movies and the pages of books throughout the world. Money, fame, power; these seem to be the things that so many strive for. And yet today’s passage proclaims loud and clear just the opposite. It tells us to live our lives “free from the love of money and be content with what we have.” Why would the author suggest that? Why would anyone write something so contrary to human reasoning unless it is true or he has something better to offer? In this case the author of Hebrews has both. He was telling the truth. When all is said and done, contentment, peace, joy and love are the true treasures of life. Money can help with this, but the “love of money” is something else. It is an addiction, an unreasonable, irrational obsession with something that gives false hope. Drugs never satisfy long-term, neither will the love of money. When will you ever have enough? When will you ever be able to say “no” to the irrational obsession that the love of money creates? So what does the author suggest we really seek after? Jesus Himself. It is Jesus who promises to never leave us, to never forsake us. He is the one who can really fill our heart with love, give us the purpose, peace and satisfaction that we were created for. It is Jesus that your soul is looking for. Today, turn to Him. Bring your longings to Jesus and let Him begin to satisfy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, thank You for loving me. Thank You that You will never leave me or forsake me. Thank You for giving me everything I need to be content in this world. I accept You as the Lord of my life and dedicate myself to following You.
AMEN

Comfort

TODAY’S VERSE
“I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; O my God, do not delay.”
Psalms 40:17 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Every once in a while we need comfort don’t we? The news is worst than we thought, the pain is overwhelming, the pressure is tough, the fearful thoughts are relentless. What are we to do? The Psalmist remembers God. We should too. We should remember that God thinks of us. He is our help and deliverer and even though we are poor and needy, God’s hand can still extend to our aid. In II Corinthians 1:3-5 Paul writes, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.” Do you know God as your merciful Father? You can today. Come to Him, let Him comfort you. He knows your need, He will be your help and deliverer. And when He does comfort you, you can go and comfort others in the same way God comforted you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to You, poor and needy. Help me today. Comfort me and help me comfort someone else in the same way You did me.
AMEN

His Abiding Peace

TODAY’S VERSE
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What do we have to do to experience the peace that Paul is writing about? Do we have to strive for it? Is it something we have to earn? Is there a special prayer we need to recite? No, it is nothing we do, it is something we accept. Paul shares the secret. He shares that we need to present every situation to God and then rest in Him. He tells us not to be anxious about anything but to give everything to God in prayer. It is coming into His presence in prayer that we find our peace. It is focusing our attention on His almighty power, His extravagant love, and His particular awareness of our situation that we are suddenly ushered into a consciousness of His peace. This is our home. His peace transcends any circumstance. This is where we belong, but somehow we slip out of this awareness. We are like a bird that is flying, constantly looking for the sky. All we need to do is open our eyes. We are loved by God, He is constantly aware of us, and His peace transcends all our circumstances. Today, let us open our eyes and become deeply aware of His peace.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your abiding presence. Thank You for Your constant love for me. Help me today be fully aware of all that You are. Help me experience the peace that You have for me.
AMEN

Renew Me

TODAY’S VERSE
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. – Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
II Corinthians 4:8,9,16 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What are you going to do today? What’s on your list? It is hard to get everything done when we are stressed and under the gun. But what about those things that never made your list? How will they ever have a chance? Paul knew what it was like to have struggles. He had a lot to do. A lot of churches looked to him for leadership. He was concerned about all the new converts and whether they were getting the right teachings. On top of all that, Paul had much contention and hardships as he ministered. He said that he was, hard pressed, perplexed, persecuted, and struck down. It would have been horrible to work under these conditions except for one thing. And Paul had it on his list of things to do. He took the time to be inwardly renewed every day! Look at what he wrote, “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” Paul took the time to get to know God. He allowed the Holy Spirit to minister to him. He came to God and did not leave until the work of renewing was done. It was on the top of his list of things to do. Is it on yours? Today, find some time to let God minister to you. Be purposeful and deliberate in getting to know God and He will renew you day by day.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Holy Spirit, I come to You today and ask You to renew me. Renew my thoughts, renew my attitudes, renew my passion. Fill me, guide me, direct my path. Renew me today I pray.
AMEN

Peace

TODAY’S VERSE
“Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.”
Psalms 34:14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Who said peace is easy? Anyone can be at peace when there aren’t any enemies. Peace can be maintained with the right amount of isolation. If we can just stay away from people, we could make it. But what if we are the trouble maker? What if we stir up everything because we want things our way? David said that we were to turn away from evil. If we want peace, then we have to let go of our selfish ambitions. Instead, we are admonished to do good to others. And when peace alludes us, we are to search for it. We need to seek for it like we would a buried treasure. Peace is priceless and worth searching for. Finally, we are to work hard at maintaining the peace that we do have. This means turning the other cheek, preferring others over our own self, doing to others in the way we want to be treated. It means praying for peace. Seeking God and asking for His wisdom, understanding and courage. God is love. He is all about peace. Today, seek peace with all your heart, work hard at it.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You that You desire us to be at peace. Help me today to be at peace with You and all those around me.
AMEN

Be Not Afraid

TODAY’S VERSE
“Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.”
Psalms 27:3 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes the best way to overcome something is to replace it with the opposite. David decided to do this with fear. When he was surrounded by a mighty invading army he had a choice to make. He could go with the normal response of fear or he could replace fear with the opposite. He could fill his heart with confidence in God. It was this love that he had for God and the love he knew God had for him that allowed him to exercise confidence. He was trusted in God’s love. The Bible says, “perfect love casts out fear.” Add to perfect love an all powerful God and you have a real confidence maker. Today, when stress comes into your life, when you are tempted to become overwhelmed, put your trust in God. Step out in faith and let confidence in Him take over.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank You Father, that You are trustworthy. You are all powerful and all loving. I come to you today and lay my fears at Your feet. Give me the confidence to completely trust in You.
AMEN
