Sit Before The Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then went King David in, and sat before the LORD.”
II Samuel 7:18 (KJV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love this verse. The Bible makes it clear that King David was a “man after God’s own heart.” David knew the heart of God and wrote many of the beautiful Psalms that we have come to love. In today’s passage we see David was moved deeply by God and had to talk to Him. What I love is that David went into the Tabernacle and sat before the Lord. This is the same Tabernacle where the sons of Aaron died because they did not follow protocol. Now some teach that sitting was a sign of worship in the ancient days. But it sure wasn’t what the Priests did. They could only come into the presence of the Lord and do exactly what was set down in the law. No more, no less. And here was David, like a child before his Father, sitting, no doubt in reverence but also in love. Love for His heavenly Father. And because of Jesus and His sacrifice for us, we have become His children and get to come sit in the presence of the Lord any time we desire. He bids us to come to Him, worship Him, share with Him, pray to Him. God created us so we could have a deep and loving relationship with Him. Today, come to God. Sit before Him, enjoy His presence. Share with Him your burdens, your concerns. Express to Him your joy and your love. What a glorious privilege is ours, to sit before God Almighty.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, I sit before You in deep wonder and worship. Who am I that You would allow me to know Your presence and yet You do. Your love for me is immeasurable. I sit in worship and adoration. I sit in humility and praise Your Holy name. You are my God and I sit humbly before You.
AMEN

Speak Lord

TODAY’S VERSE
‘“So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.”’
I Samuel 3:9 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Have you ever put yourself in the Samuel’s position? Have you been at a place where you really desire to hear a word from God? God loves you and wants to communicate with you. He speaks through His word, the Bible. He also speaks to your heart through the Holy Spirit. Dallas Willard in his book, Hearing God, concludes, “Direction will always be made available to the mature disciple if without it serious harm would befall people concerned in the matter or the cause of Christ. If I am right, the obedient, listening heart, mature in the things of God, will in such a case find the voice plain and the message clear, as with the experiences of the friends of God recorded in the Bible. This is a claim that must be tested by experience, and anyone willing to meet the conditions and learn from failures as well as successes can put it to the test.” Today, open your heart to hearing from God. Commit yourself to spend time with God in Bible reading, meditation and prayer. Build a deep and trusting relationship with Him and ask Him share His heart with you. Say with Samuel, “’Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” When you come to God in this way, you will hear from Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I give my heart to You and desire to know you better. I desire to hear from You. I long to discern Your direction in my life. I come and say with Samuel, “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” AMEN

Presence Of God

TODAY’S VERSE
“The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Then Moses said to him, ‘If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.’ – Then Moses said, ‘Now show me your glory.’”
Exodus 33:14-5, 18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The people of God had sinned. Moses was in the mountain, hearing from God, when God told him to go down from the mountain because the people were rebelling against Him by creating an idol and worshipping a false God. Moses pleaded with God to spare the people and God told him to take the people away. Moses knew better than to lead this people without God’s guidance so he asked for God’s presence to be with him. Even more, Moses asked God to show him His glory. Oh that we would seek out and depend upon the presence of God the same way Moses did! What a difference it would make in our life. In his book “Experiencing Healing Prayer”, Rick Richardson writes, “Do you long to be filled at the core of your being with more strength, more substance, more hope? You may feel urgent need of immediate help and practical steps. But I implore you to realize that knowing God, practicing God’s presence and seeking God’s life are more important to your healing than anything else in all the world.” C.S Lewis, in his book “Miracles” writes, “The presence of God is the most real thing we ever encounter.” Today, decide like Moses not to go any further, not to consider any new direction, without being conscious of the presence of God. Might we pray, “Lord, show me Your glory.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I know so little about Your presence. All I know is I don’t want to take another step without really knowing You. Lord, help me become aware of Your presence. Reveal Yourself to me. I pray in Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Your God Is Too Small

TODAY’S VERSE
“Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the ocean depths.” Psalms 36:5-6 “May you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” Ephesians 3:18-19

TODAY’S THOUGHT
How big is your God? In 1952, J.B. Phillips wrote a book called, “Your God Is Too Small.” It shook the Christian world. His theory was that many believers had misconceptions about God that were no more than superimposed human characteristics. God was a Santa Claus, a stern father, an impersonal clock maker, a kill joy. His book begged the question of how big was the God we visualized as we worshiped. In today’s scripture, David paints a picture for us to imagine when we think of God. He writes that God’s unfailing love is “vast as the heavens”, His faithfulness “reaches beyond the clouds.” He compares God’s righteousness to “mighty mountains” and His justice to the “ocean depths.” Even with David’s help, Paul knows that we cannot begin to understand how magnificent God really is by ourselves; so He prays that we may have power from God to really understand how wide, long, high and deep His love is. How can we begin to know how vast God is? How do we keep from making God too small? Paul shares the secret. He writes, “May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” Ask God to help you experience His love today. To really know it, feel it, sense it, see it. Ask Him to reveal Himself to you right now in ways you have never experienced Him before. If you do, what does God promise? He promises, “Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father. Can it be true? Can I really experience your love today? Can I begin to know how deep, high, long and wide it really is? Pour into my heart a sense of Your presence. Help me imagine who You really are. Forgive me for making You so small. Enlarge my vision today, I pray.
AMEN

Give What You Have

TODAY’S VERSE
Peter said, ‘I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!'” Acts 3:6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
A man was crippled sitting in the Temple Gate and was asking for money. When the Apostles Peter and John came by, the man asked them for money. Instead of giving the man money, Peter was moved by God to pronounce a healing for the man. He said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!” I believe that God has called you and I to respond to those in need in a similar way. We are to give to those in need what we have. What was it that Peter had? First, we see that Peter had obedience to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. It was God that orchestrated the healing. He nudged Peter to do this act of kindness and Peter obeyed. Second, we see that Peter had faith. Pronouncing the command of “get up and walk” was an act of faith. Peter trusted God to do what He had told him to do. Third, we see that Peter had authority. Peter commanded the man to be healed because Christ gave him the authority to act on His behalf. Today, you may be challenged to help others. If you are like Peter and your pockets are empty, do not despair. Give them what you do have. Give them love, hope, kindness, mercy, grace and life. Command a blessing upon them in the name of Jesus. You are an ambassador of Christ; go forward in obedience, faith and authority.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I want to be used by You to help others. Please guide me by Your Holy Spirit. Show me what You want me to do and then help me be obedient and have the faith to act in the authority. In Jesus Name. AMEN

Trust

TODAY’S VERSE
“This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust him.”
Psalms 91:2 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Some days it seems as if doubt is waiting for me to wake up. I go to my chair to read; doubt and fear are sitting across from me arguing with everything thing I am reading. For example, in today’s passage the Psalmist wrote, “For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. – Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you.” As I read these verses, thoughts of those I know, people who are terminally ill, those who have been abused, those suffering financially, begin racing through my mind. “God”, I think, “How does this passage apply to them? If others aren’t safe, how do I know I will be?”  I wrestled all day with my thoughts and kept coming up with the same conclusion. I cannot speak for other people. I can only be responsible for my faith. This I do believe: even though pain and suffering comes, God will always be with us. He will never abandon us. And then I was moved to look at Psalms 91 again and the second verse leapt out at me. “This I declare about the LORD: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God, and I trust him.” My soul read it and a deep peace came over me. I say it with confidence, “God is my refuge, He is the safest place I know. He is my God and I choose to trust Him.” Today, put your faith in Him. He will be your refuge. He is indeed God. You can trust Him!

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my doubt and unbelief. Thank You for being my refuge, for being a safe place for me. You indeed are my God. Today, I choose to put my trust in You.
AMEN

In His Presence

TODAY’S VERSE
“So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”
Hebrews 4:14-16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Because of the death and resurrection of Christ, we can come into the very presence of God and listen to Him. When we do, we receive all the mercy, grace and help we need, just when we need it most. What a significant truth this is! How amazing that God Almighty would let us spend time in His presence and yet how many of us take Him up on this offer? Out of a day, how much time do we deliberately spend quietly before Him. How much in a week? A month? In our lifetime? Yet, we say it is a priority? In his book “Experiencing Healing Prayer” the author, Rick Richardson writes, “My heart was receptive – As we walk the healing journey, no other single thing we can do, may have greater impact that learning to listen to God. God’s voice is the healing voice, just as God’s presence is the healing presence. We must hear the voice of God reverberate in our soul, exposing the lies about our unlovability, worthlessness or despair and speaking the truth. We must.” Christ has done everything needed so when we put our faith in Him we can come boldly and confidently into God’s presence. Today, let us come into His presence and listen to Him. Let us be confident that He desires to speak truth to us and make us whole. Let us find the mercy, grace and help we need.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank You, dear Lord, for providing a way that I can come into Your presence. Thank You that Christ is my High Priest and I can come boldy into Your presence and be confident that You will give me all the mercy, grace and help I need to make it through this day. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

A Simple Thing

TODAY’S VERSE
“This is what the LORD says: This dry valley will be filled with pools of water! You will see neither wind nor rain, says the LORD, but this valley will be filled with water. You will have plenty for yourselves and your cattle and other animals. But this is only a simple thing for the LORD.”
2 Kings 3:16-18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love the faith of Elisha. He is telling everyone that God is going to do this mighty miracle. God was going to fill a desert with water without rain! And yet Elisha glibly adds, “But this is only a simple thing for the Lord.” Why is this so hard for us to believe? Why do we so often vacillate between faith and unbelief? Most of the time when I have doubt, it is because I do not know what the will of God will be in a given situation. I seem to lack confidence in how to pray. Other times it is simply a lack of faith. I need to be reminded what Elisha was trying to say; miracles are not too hard for God. So how should I pray? I think I need to pray as God leads me. Elisha was close to God and it was God’s Spirit that came upon him and led him to believe. Deep communion with God will do the same for me. I should be able to ask Him for mighty things and have the assurance that nothing is too hard for God. So if a miracle does not happen, let it be due to the sovereignty of God, not in fact that I did not believe or never asked. Today let us seek God’s face in all matters and pray in faith believing. Answering prayer is a simple thing for the Lord.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your mighty miracles. Help me to trust in You. Give me see with Your eyes. Help me to commune with You and really know Your heart so I can pray in faith believing.
AMEN

Wisdom and Understanding

TODAY’S VERSE
“Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. –  For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
Proverbs 2:2-3, 6 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
What a difference wisdom and understanding can make. How many times have we forged on ahead into disaster because we did not seek God for the insight that only He can give. Solomon knew about this more than any man that ever lived. He was asked specifically by God to request anything that he wanted and he asked for wisdom. He knew that with wisdom everything, else in life would come. In today’s passage Solomon shares his secret to life. He writes, “Seek wisdom and understanding”. Specifically, he encourages us to seek God because. “The Lord grants wisdom. From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” And yet it is in our human nature to think that we have all the answers. Why would we ever need to seek God? How foolish. Today, let us be wise, by seeking Him in everything we do. Let’s ask God to grant us wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I pray that You would lead me today. I cannot make it without Your guidance. Give me the wisdom, knowledge and understanding that I so desperately need.
AMEN

God’s Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.”
Psalms 86:15 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
God’s grace is amazing. His love toward us is unfailing. Here David is worshiping God and thanking Him for His compassion and mercy. He praises God for being filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. David knew this, he believed it, he felt it deep in his heart. And yet, how many of us never quite get it? Yes, the God we believe in is the same God that David is referring to, but our heart cannot seem to grasp that He really loves us. What about you? Is something inside of you broken? Perhaps your receiver doesn’t get the love signal. Instead, you feel you have to please God. Deep inside you fear that if God really knew you, He would never love you. But here is the truth. God does know you and fully loves you. He knows the truth about you. He doesn’t see you as an abandoning father does. He doesn’t put demands on you like an evil stepmother. From the time you were thought of by God, He has loved you. You don’t have to earn it, you can’t lose it. Today, you can say deep in your heart the same prayer that David prayed, “God is full of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me really understand the depths of your love for me. Help me grasp your compassion, embrace your mercy and really begin to see that your love and faithfulness is unfailing. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN
