Search My Heart

TODAY’S VERSE
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
Psalms 139:23-24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
The Bible says that David “was a man after God’s heart.” What a tribute. Contrary to what we might think, this was not because David was perfect. He knew how easy he could fall into sin. He remembered how God had to wake him up from an immoral stupor through the rebuke of Nathan the Prophet. If anyone could have created the slogan “No perfect people allowed,” it was David. David had to give up the “perception of perfection” in order to renew a close relationship with God. When God convicted David of wrong doing, David repented, asking God to have mercy on him. In order to stay in a close relationship with God, David decided to allow God to speak to him about his behavior. He prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.” How about you? Do you feel far from God? Who moved? What is stopping you from coming back? Is it pride? Is it anger? Is it the false notion that you don’t need to? Let us join David in becoming a man after God’s heart, not through the false ambition of perfection, but through the daily, honest and open relationship with God that allows Him to search us, point out what we are doing wrong and then lead us along the path of following Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I come to you today and pray what David prayed so long ago, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
AMEN

Peace, Love and Grace

TODAY’S VERSE
Peace be with you, dear brothers and sisters, and may God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you love with faithfulness. May God’s grace be eternally upon all who love our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 6:23-24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Paul knew how to end a letter. I can imagine him thinking, “What three things would my dear brothers and sisters in Christ need the most in the world? What would help them with any situation? What would give them the strength to carry on? What would be worth dying for? What would make life worth living?” This was more than the granting of three wishes. Paul prayed with the full knowledge that what he prayed could be our reality. He prayed that God would give you peace. He prayed that the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ would give you love. And finally, that God’s own grace would be on you for all eternity. Peace, love and grace. What could you do with that today? How much would you keep for yourself? How much would you give away? And what do you do when someone offers you a gift? You take it. So today, might you take and be conscious of all the peace, love and grace God has for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your peace, love and grace that You have for me. I pray that today I might really begin to experience the effects of Your peace, love and grace in all that I do. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Roots

TODAY’S VERSE
“Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.”
Ephesians 3:17-18 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Roots are crucial to the health of a plant. It is the way that plants get water and nourishment. Jesus used plants and roots as a metaphor on our spiritual life. He pointed out that “where” you put your roots can make all the difference in the world. Jesus shared about the futility of sowing seed on a path where the roots can’t grow. This represents the evil one stealing away the truth from our heart. He says some seed falls on a rocky area where the roots can’t grow deep. This represents a lack of commitment where spiritual fervor doesn’t last long. Finally, Jesus shared about seed that falls in the weeds where the competition for the roots steals away nourishment. This represents the cares of this world or lure of wealth taking us away from our walk with Christ. Instead, Jesus said that we need to plant the seed on good ground. In Ephesians  Paul is praying for the church, that we would let our roots grow deep into the love that Christ has for us. How do we do this? By opening our heart to Christ’s influence and trusting in Him. If we want to mature in Christ, then we must spend time in good soil. We need to pray, read His word and meditate in His presence. Where are your roots? Are emotional issues leaving your faith malnourished? Are the cares of this world choking you out? Come to Jesus –let your roots go down deep into His love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, too many of my roots have been shallow. I have not let my roots go down deep into Your love. My commitment has wavered. I’ve let the cares of this world choke me out. Help me today begin to go deeper with You. Feed me, nourish my soul, I pray. Help me know You more, hear You more, love You more. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Believe

 TODAY’S VERSE
“For they did not believe God or trust him to care for them.”
Psalms 78:22 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There is a fine line between trust and faith. The Children of Israel were in the wilderness, a hard and barren land. It was a difficult and cruel existence. Even though God had promised to take care of them, they did not believe it. It was hard for them to trust God to provide for them. It is hard to trust with your mind when your feet are in a precarious place. That is when trust needs to turn into faith. They would need faith that He would take care of them. This is where the Israelites failed. Like us, instead of faith, they chose murmuring and complaining. They looked around and saw nothing but rocks and a hot and barren land. They did not see God. Today, might we open our eyes to the reality of God in our own situation. Might we trust God for a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. Might we taste the Manna and drink of the water from the rock. Today, let us rejoice, for He is Jehovah-jireh, the Lord our provider.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, forgive me for my complaining. Forgive me when I forget that You love me and are my provider. I lay my needs at Your feet and give You all my trust and faith.
AMEN

Inner Strength

Inner Strength

TODAY’S VERSE
“I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.”
Ephesians 3:14-16 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
I love the prayers that Paul prayed. His prayers give great insight into the will of God for His children. I believe that Paul models in his prayers what we can pray for ourselves. So what is Paul saying we can ask God for in this prayer? According to Paul, we can ask God to empower us with inner strength from His unlimited resources! Inner strength. What would it feel like to be empowered with inner strength? How would that change your day today? If you were empowered with inner strength, what would you do differently? I believe God wants to empower you with inner strength and He certainly has the resources to do it. Do you have the faith to ask? Why not join Paul and ask God to use His glorious, unlimited resources to empower you with inner strength today.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, Creator of everything in heaven and on earth, I pray that today, from your glorious, unlimited resources, You would empower me with inner strength through Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Your Will Be Done

TODAY’S VERSE
“He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, ‘My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.’”
Matthew 26:39

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Obedience is not the absence of doubt or fear. It is an act of faith and trust. Jesus was a perfect example. He knew that His purpose was to be the sacrifice for the sins of the world. He also knew that His death would be an excruciating, painful ordeal. In His anguish He came to God His Father and asked if it was possible to let the suffering that He was to face be put off. But in the next breath, He chose to exercise the gut wrenching faith that you and I are called to follow. Against His circumstantial evidence, against His desire to be free from such terrific agony, He submitted Himself to His loving Father. His Father, our Almighty God. God who is almighty in love, in knowledge and in power. He modeled the faith and trust that you and I need in order to live the life God has for us. He prayed, “I want Your will to be done, not mine.” That’s it, isn’t it? That says it all. Faith and obedience come together. Love and trust intersect. What is it you are struggling with? What is it that you can not understand? What difficulties have you at your wits’ end? Come to God. Follow Christ and surrender to your loving Father. Pray, “Not my will Lord, but Your will be done.” And with that kind of faith, where Jesus said in His death, “Into Your hands I commit my Spirit.” We can say in our life, “Into Your hands I commit myself.”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, there are so many times that I don’t know what to do. I am so perplexed, so troubled, but today I choose faith. I choose You. I choose to trust Your will and I pray that it will be done in my life. In Jesus’ name I pray.
AMEN

Let’s Make A Deal

TODAY’S VERSE
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
Proverbs 3:5-6

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When it comes to seeking God’s will, we often fall into the role of Monty Hall on the old TV game show, “Let’s Make a Deal.” Larry Crabb in his book The Pressures Off shares how we try to negotiate the Lord’s will. He writes, “You negotiate; you do not worship. You analyze and interpret to gain control over what happens; you do not depend. You seek the “better life” of God’s blessing over the “better hope” of God’s presence.” His advice was, “Seek only the blessing of His presence, and you’ll know what to do.” David says that the secret to God’s will is to trust in Him with all our heart and to seek His will in all we do. When we do, David says that God will show us what to do. Larry Crabb in his book The PAPA Prayer writes, “Know God so well that the deepest desire of His heart actually becomes the deepest desire of ours. That frees us to ask God for what we really want with the confidence that He’ll move heaven and earth to grant our requests, because what we want now matches what He wants.” We don’t need to make a deal with God. We don’t need to try to balance a scale to get our way. We need to know Him. We need to spend time in His presence. As we do, He will direct us, He will guide our path.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I confess, I have sought Your blessings more than I have sought You. I have spent time seeking Your blessing more than Your presence. Lord, I want to know You. I want to seek You with all my heart. Please show me how. Please draw me to Yourself through the power and love of Your Holy Spirit. Dear God, take my life, take my mind, take my will. I want only You. In Jesus’ name. AMEN

Trust

TODAY’S VERSE
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NTL)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Sometimes you just have to trust. You know what it’s like. You are sitting there and “bam” – the sky starts falling. You are caught off guard. Your head starts spinning and you feel sick to your stomach. Gasping for breath you start accessing your situation. For some, adrenalin starts to kick in and you hang on for the ride. For others you just go numb. Indecision, blocked from thinking, you just sit there. You too are on a ride, even if it doesn’t feel like you are going anywhere. And that is when you have to trust. It’s the journey where you need your faith. And God promises to show us the way to go. He asks us to trust Him. It is desperate times when we can’t depend on our own understanding. Instead, we must seek His will and God promises that He will show us which way to go. So today, hang on. God knows your situation. He knows and deeply cares. Come to Him. Quit trying to figure it out and trust. He is there. He will show you the way.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Lord, I surrender. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know which way to go. I will quit depending on my own understanding and will trust in You with all my heart. I need Your supernatural wisdom and guidance. Today I will seek Your will; please show me which way to go. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Love and Good Works

TODAY’S VERSE
“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.”
Hebrews 10:24 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
When you became a Christian, you became a follower of Christ. You became part of a world-wide fellowship of believers. This is more than a fraternity, it is a fellowship. But more than a fellowship, it is a mission. It is part of our DNA. Our mission is to love others and to become involved in doing good. Love and doing good? It sounds too simple and too humanistic. Instead, we want to preach and teach and tell others about the love of God. While this is crucial, we miss the point. God has chosen some to teach, some to preach, but He has chosen us all to love. For how would the preaching and teaching be accepted by the world if it wasn’t backed up with real living proof? And the proof that Christianity is real is in our actions, not our words. So if we want to see others around us come to know Christ, then we must think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me live for you. Help me also think of ways to motivate others around me to join me in performing acts of love and good works.
AMEN

God’s Power Is Our Strength

God is awesome in his sanctuary. The God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!”
Psalm 68:35 (NLT)

TODAY’S VERSE

TODAY’S THOUGHT
There are a lot of things that we need to make it through this life. Sometimes it is hard to ascertain what exactly to ask for. Today’s verse sets good guidelines to help us when we pray. First, God is awesome. We have every right to ask for His miraculous power to intervene in our situations. He is able to heal, change circumstances or to move in the hearts of people. We need to ask and expect God to be awesome on behalf of His people. And yet there is another side. Today’s verse also says that God gives power and strength to His people. Although we can ask God to show His love to others, has He not chosen you and I to be His love in this world? Paul wrote, “We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” And who knew this better than David? After all, who slew Goliath? Was it David who picked up the stone and aimed at Goliath or God who directed the stone? David knew. He said to Goliath, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies. – Today the LORD will conquer you and I will cut off your head.” God created you and I do be His ambassadors in this world and He gives us the strength and power to do His will. What a magnificent plan, God with His power working with and through us to do His will in this world. No wonder David ended saying, “Praise be to God!”

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I can’t live the life You want me to without Your power. Nor do I want to try. I come today and ask You to guide me, direct me, and fill me with Your power and strength. And may You show Yourself strong through all I say and do. To You be all the Glory!
AMEN
