The Lord Bless You

TODAY’S VERSE
“The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”
Numbers 6:24-26 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
So often we put the emphasis on us “following” God when we would be better off “responding” to God. We worry so much about how to love God when we all we really need to do is truly understand His love for us. If we really knew what today’s verse really meant how could loving God ever be an issue? How could we ever be worried about following Him? But do we really believe that God desires to bless us and keep us? Do we see God as a loving God that turns His face toward us with such a focus that it is as His face is shining right on us? It is this daunting attention from our loving God that causes us to love Him. It is this knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that His intention is to bless us and keep us, to be gracious with us and give us peace that causes us to follow Him without reservation. John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, said it best, “We love Him because He first loved us.” Today know that God has blessed you and kept you. Understand that He has turned His face toward you and has shined it upon you. Finally receive the peace that comes from knowing His unconditional love.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your awareness of me. Thank You for shining Your face on me. Thank Your for turning Your face toward me and giving me peace. Today Lord, help me live in this reality.
AMEN

A Word From God

TODAY’S VERSE

“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—He will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”
John 14:26 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to get in the habit of reading the “word of God” without getting a “word from God.” There is a big difference. The Pharisees knew the word. Satan quoted it. But God’s word is meant for more than just reading. Paul wrote in a letter to Timothy, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” Jesus said that He gave us the Holy Spirit in order to personalize His word to each of us. He said, “He will teach you everything.” The author of the Hebrews wrote, “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” So when we come to the word of God, let us remember that we are coming to God and ask Him to speak to us, move in our heart and show us His will. Today, don’t settle for the word of God, get a word from God.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I need Your wisdom. I need Your instruction. I need Your assurances. As I come to Your word, open my eyes, open my heart that I may hear Your voice and understand what You want to say to me.
AMEN

Anxiety

TODAY’S VERSE
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
I Peter 5:7 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
So often you hear the admonitions, “Don’t fear.”, “Stop worrying.” or “Quit being afraid.” These are helpful and can often stop us from pursuing a downward spiral of despair. But Peter had a better way. Instead of clipping back the weeds of fear and worry, Peter is recommending that we pull fear out by the roots. He suggests that we pull all our anxiety out by the roots and bring them to Jesus. Not a few or some, all! And why can we do that? Because Jesus cares for us! And how He cares for you! It is like the old hymn says, “Is there a heart o’er bound by sorrow? Is there a life weighed down by care? Come to the cross each burden bearing. All our anxiety leave it there. All your anxiety, all your care, bring to the mercy seat leave it there; never a burden He cannot bear, never a friend like Jesus.” Today, turn to Jesus. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know all about my worry and fear. I come to You now and cast all my anxiety at Your feet. Instead of taking it back, help me take Your love with me instead.
AMEN

No Fear

TODAY’S VERSE
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Psalms 23:4 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Fear can cripple us. It is an insidious cancer of the mind that eats away at our opportunities in life. Why is this? I am convinced that it is because we fear with our inner-child or some other traumatized part of ourself. We have unresolved memories that need to be dwelt with by Christ. Now it is true that we are to have “child-like” faith, but nowhere are we taught to have child-like fear. This is an immature state-of-mine. All we see is the terror and fear that we had when we were more defenseless. Instead, we are to face our situations as mature adults looking through the eyes of Jesus. As an adult in Christ we are not defenseless. We have all the power and love of Christ at our disposal. We can trust Him and step out in faith. Today, examine your own fears. Are they the result of some left over issue from the past? Ask Christ to come and comfort you like He did David. Ask Him to renew your mind and to heal that part of you that is in bondage. Remember, He is with you, He will comfort you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know me. I come now and lay my fears at Your feet. Heal me, help me, I pray. In Jesus’ name.
AMEN

Patience

TODAY’S VERSE
“Being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience.”
Colossians 1:11 (NIV)

“But the fruit of the Spirit is – patience!”
Galatians 5:22 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Patience can be a very difficult to come by and yet what a powerful attribute to have. Think of all that could be done if we acted with patience instead of haste and pressure. Think of all the aggravation that could have been avoided had we waited just a little longer. Think of all the headache and tension that could have been obsolete had we just had patience. Patience is a sign of God’s presence in our life. It is the result of His Spirit living in us, strengthening us with His might! Today, when difficulties come, when plans get foiled or someone else’s urgency becomes our emergency, let us ask for patience. Let us cry out to God for strength and endurance and by His grace, patience will be a fruit of the Spirit that is alive in us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You for Your presence in my life. Thank You for the strength and endurance that You give me. I pray that it will produce the patience that I need  for today.
AMEN

Courage To Pray

TODAY’S VERSE
“So your servant has found courage to pray to you.”
1 Chronicles 17:25 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
Why would someone need courage to pray? Have you? I have. Praying is all about courage. It is looking at your situation and saying, “I will exercise my faith and trust that God is all that He says He is and that He will answer my prayer.” Praying is courage because you are trusting God and giving up your right to try to do everything on your own. It is courage, because it would be easier to run and hide instead of facing your situation and trusting God. It is courage, because you are full of doubts about His love, your worthiness, His power, your faith. What if your trust God and nothing happens? What will others think? Who cares? The truth is that trusting God and praying is a risk worth taking. So today, when you are stuck, frustrated, afraid or confused, be like David and find the courage to pray.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, I believe, help my unbelief! Give me hope and faith so when struggles come, I will stop and have the courage to pray to You.
AMEN

Humble Yourself

TODAY’S VERSE
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
I Peter 5:5-7 (NIV)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
We are complex beings. Behind our behavior are a labyrinth of beliefs, assumptions and attitudes. For example, if we have a need, you would think that we would automatically ask God for help. But instead, we get proud and see our need as a sign of weakness. People ask us “How are you?” and we say, “Fine!” We believe that having a need and asking for help would reduce our self image that we are fighting to protect. The Bible calls this kind of thinking “pride”. Peter writes:  “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” God knows our needs and He delights in our coming to Him. Peter verifies this when he writes, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Today, don’t let pride get in your way. Humble yourself and come to Christ with all your needs and He will care for you.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, You know my needs. You are God Almighty and have promised that I can cast all my anxieties on You because You genuinely care for me. Thank You, Lord, for Your love. Thank You for Your gracious provision.
AMEN

Anger

TODAY’S VERSE
“And ‘don’t sin by letting anger control you.’ Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.”
Ephesians 4:26-27 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
One of the evidences of the fruit of the Spirit in our life is “self-control”. And there is nothing harder to control than our anger. God originally created anger as a defense mechanism to protect us from life threatening danger. Unfortunately, today “danger” has been watered down. Now the majority of what we get angry at is not life threatening at all. Instead we are protecting ourself from embarrassment, inconvenience, consequences or someone stopping us from doing things our own way. We even get mad at God when He dares to go against what seems right in our eyes. Paul warns us about anger. He suggests that we control anger before it controls us. He wrote, “Don’t sin by letting anger control you. Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry.” Today, get a grip on your anger. Make up your mind that anger will not get control of you. Instead, if anything is going to control you, let it be the Holy Spirit.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, thank You that You don’t ask me to do anything that you won’t help me with. I am asking You today to help me with my anger. Holy Spirit, help me control my anger and not give any foothold to Satan.
AMEN

Self Control

TODAY’S VERSE
“So think clearly and exercise self-control.- Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires.”
I Peter 1:13-14 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
It is easy to fall prey to our own desires and lusts. I know if I am not careful, I will spend time doing things that are not in my best interest. Peter is encouraging us to live a better way. Now that we know Christ we don’t have to slip back into our old habits. We can count on God to help us with new desires. As we read the scriptures, spend time with God in prayer and keep our conscience clear with Him, He will renew our mind. He will help us “think clearly and exercise self-control”. It is this thinking clearly, this deliberate focused attention on God and His power, His strength, His love for us, that helps us align our thinking with His. It is this deliberate focus and yielding to the indwelling Holy Spirit that helps us exercise the self-control that is crucial to living our lives the way He wants us to. Today, let’s think clearly. Let’s focus on God and His will for our life, then we will exercise our self-control in living this day for Him.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Father, help me today to think clearly. Help me exercise the self-control that You desire for me. I don’t want to slip back into my old ways. I want to live for You. Help me to this end I pray.
AMEN

In His Love

TODAY’S VERSE
“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. – I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!”
John 15:9,11 (NLT)

TODAY’S THOUGHT
This was one of the most passionate speeches of Jesus Christ. He is before His disciples and encourages them to “abide” in Him. He uses the illustration of a vine and a branch. The branch is alive because it is connected to the vine. The vine is the source of life and as long as the branch “abides” or “remains” connected to the vine it will thrive. Jesus wanted the same for us. He comes and assures us, “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me.” How powerful is this? Jesus loves us in the same way that God the Father loved Him. What a supernatural love, and it is ours. And what does Jesus ask of us? He asks that we remain in His love. Can you imagine being at an exotic resort, basking in the sun, totally relaxed, enjoying the wind and the surf and the owner gives you the key to the place and says, “Remain here!” Jesus is saying, “I love you just like God the Father loves me and I want you to enjoy, bask in and take advantage of all the love I have for you!” And with this love comes a supernatural joy. A joy that completely fills our being until it overflows. So today, think of your connection to Jesus Christ. Sense all the love He has for you and then rejoice. Let yourself overflow with His joy.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Jesus, thank You for Your love. I realize that You are the vine and I am a branch. Today, help me remain in You. Help me get all the love I need from my connection with You. As I remain in Your love, fill me with Your joy.
AMEN
